NIFTA - A 2019 Retrospective

This special Retrospective Mailer brings you some of the highlights of the past year at NIFTA.

But, before we delve into memory lane, here's an urgent call-to-action for NIFTA members. If you would like to participate in APPAREL SOURCING WEEK 2020 (Bengaluru, 20-22 February 2020), please connect at president@niftalumni.org immediately. For NIFTA members show space and special access is available at significant discount. To access the offer, you would need to book the stall through NIFTA. Costs are inclusive of ready built up booth - you need to come only with samples. In case there are multiple members who are willing to share a common space, we can look at collaborating for a larger space, which would be more cost-efficient. The Year In Perspective

2019 was an active year for both NIFT and NIFTA. The NIFTA Industry Mentor series was launched, with sessions being conducted in Delhi and Mumbai, and will be spread to other campuses soon. NIFTA partnered the India Fashion Forum in Mumbai. NIFT saw the announcement of its first named chair, the Shahi Chair. Chapter activity saw an upswing as well. The Mumbai campus also now has a NIFTA office in addition to the Delhi campus. The Delhi chapter organised a members' lunch mid-year and 2019 also saw the first-ever NIFTA meetup in Dhaka.

NIFTA partnered with the India Fashion Forum 2019 and the IFF event kicked off with the NIFTA Conclave, with all panellists being NIFT Alumni. The engaging discussion covered six underlying principles of building and growing a fashion business: first mover advantage; fashion today, not tomorrow; width over depth; customer research; end-to-end technology; and brand experience. NIFT announced the formation of Named Chairs, which would be set up with sponsored funds to help push the frontiers of their scholarship, provide assistance to students and research fellows, and create opportunities for collaborative projects. On 26 July 2019, Smt. Smriti Irani, Honorable Minister of Textiles, and Shri Harish Ahuja, Chairman of Shahi Exports inaugurated the Shahi Chair at the NIFT Delhi campus. NIFT Delhi named Dr. Prabir Jana (also a NIFT Alumnus) as the first Shahi Chair Professor Industry 4.0.

NIFTA Industry Mentor Series

In April 2019, NIFTA launched the NIFTA Industry Mentor Series in conjunction with NIFT. Covering a range of subjects such as industry expectations, industry expertise, design-based thinking and sensibilities, and new opportunities in the industry from online to AI-aided fashion, the sessions aim to impart powerful mentoring for current students of NIFT.

The first session was conducted at NIFT Delhi, and was led by Manish Trbihuvan (GMT 1996-97, Kolkata) and Brajesh Rawat (GMT 2000-02, Gandhinagar) and led to the students gaining insights on practical experience in business, on internships, job preferences, and other areas.

Chapter Updates

Nifta Dhaka 1st Meet

Dhaka

On 9th March, NIFTA member Smita Kansal organised a meet of alumni based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. NIFTA members Sanjay Taneja and Vinay Arora, and many other alumni participated in the meet. The alumni group represented graduating batches ranging from 1990 to 2014, and campuses including Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Jodhpur, Chennai and others.
