Happy Wednesday!

It's been a busy month. Almost exactly one year after we launched the BGFB (🎉!), we welcome our new Chair Muddassar Ahmed (say hello on Twitter or read his thoughts on the 'UK hunger crisis' here) and we're faced with having to find a new temporary home.

In six weeks time, St Matthews will be closing for some essential works and looks to be out of bounds for six months. If you, or someone you know knows a place big enough to store, pack and distribute do give us a shout 📢 on or get in touch via social media.

Despite the grim January weather our volunteers have been working hard, distributing  798 (!!) parcels this month. Thanks to all of you for braving the rain and snow to keep us keeping on.

Catch you next month.

Stay safe,
Your BGFB Team

  • This week will be our last week delivering to our community members. From now on, we'll be relying on our wonderful mutual aid network to help us get help to those who need it. If you're not involved yet, do consider joining your local TH mutual aid group here.
  • We have some really great neighbours 👋! When we're not around, the Co-op on Hackney Road, the Fuckoffees on Bethnal Green Road, Simply Fresh and Maks News are there collect our donations for us. Do pop in and say hello!
  • We're not alone. FoodCycle Hackney are providing hot meals from Kingshold Community Centre, E9 7LP on Thursdays from 12.30-1.30pm and
FoodCycle Bow Road is cooking vegetarian meals every Friday from 7-8pm at the Methodist Church, 1 Merchant Street, E3 4LY.

Catching up with...
Erin founder of the BGFB, freelance author and speaker & Rector of St Matthew's Church.

After their numbers started rising dramatically in 2018, Bow Foodbank put out a call for help. Given the unused space in the church, Erin began a conversation about launching a 'sister food bank' and here we are, celebrating our one-year anniversary. We caught up with Erin over e-mail.

Home is I grew up in Michigan, but home is Bethnal Green right now.

What's your East London secret? The Common on Old Bethnal Green road is an excellent (and somewhat hidden) cafe.

What do you miss most from pre-COVID times? Going to live music gigs with friends.

What would you do if you were Mayor for the day? I'd lobby for a lot more pedestrianised/cycle-friendly streets, and increase the support for projects working with asylum seekers and migrants, especially those who are LGBTQ+.

This is a first in an ongoing series celebrating members of the BGFB community. Catch up with Erin over on Twitter @e_m_clark.
