ITIAH Bulletin
December 2021

Message from the Founder

Hi friends! We hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and got to enjoy the foods of the fall season. ITIAH Angels for Learning (IAFL) stayed busy with Giving Tuesday, which took place recently. We wanted to thank everyone who donated during this event which started November 20th and lasted through December 4th. Every donation- no matter how big or small- has made an impact as we rebound from the pandemic and its economic fallout going into 2022.

With the winter season approaching, our volunteers are planning many community activities. Upcoming virtual events will be posted on the website, published in future newsletters, and announced on Facebook and other social media platforms. It is important to stay connected with IAFL as we continue to bring events that are not only fun and enjoyable but also informative and educational for members of our community.

As we reflect on the past year, please note that our gratitude for your support is immense. The various fundraising campaigns and outreach programs we launched throughout the year secured the necessary funds needed to sponsor all 100 students at EML school at 200 dollars each for the year 2021-2022 school year. Together, we also made an impact on the clean water initiative, nutrition, and health programs for the students. You were also quick to send aid after the devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake which occurred on August 14, 2021 in the south of Haiti. Your donation provided food and clean water to those students and their families. Words cannot express how grateful we are for you!

Going towards the new year, I pray that you will continue to support us whichever way you can. Our projects are ambitious, but many hands make light work. To optimize learning, we endeavor to complete the following in 2022:
  • A borehole project for clean water on the school campus
  • Addition of new classrooms to reduce the overcrowded classrooms
  • Purchase 30 more Sawyer water filters for students to use at home
  • Send food supplements to reduce the malnutrition rate among students
  • Provide tablets for homework when students cannot go to school due to insecurities
  • Ship gently used keyboards to launch Piano Marvel music program
  • Launch a language program (French, English, Spanish) with Rosetta stone
  • Professional development program for the teachers
If you know any companies or individuals that can help us with the above projects, please don’t hesitate to reach out at On behalf of all our volunteers, I wish you and your family a joyous holiday season and a happy New Year! We thank you from the bottom of our grateful hearts.

Warm regards,

Marie Thadal

Six Facts about Haitian Holiday Traditions

Everybody around the world is getting ready to celebrate Christmas in December and Haiti is no exception. Here are six Haitian holiday traditions I would like to share with you:

 1. In a U.S. government report, it is estimated that 84% of the population in Haiti is Christian. Christmas is a big religious event for most Haitians. Everyone goes to La Messe de Minuit (Midnight Mass) on Christmas Eve and continues at home for a celebration dinner called Réveillon.“Réveillon” comes from the French word “réveil” which means “waking” and is a time to celebrate the awakening of Christ with a feast. Réveillon is a huge part of Haitian culture and many Haitians who live abroad. These parties can often be celebrated at home or a restaurant, as families and friends feast, dance, and sing all night long...

Piano Marvel

The piano has been a revolutionary stringed instrument, allowing the performer to not only play the melody of a piece but also the harmony simultaneously. Interestingly, there are many studies that show the benefits of learning piano at a young age. A study from the Center for the Study of Human Development at Brown University discovered that musical training boosted second graders’ counting and math skills significantly above their peers. Additionally, a recent study from Cardiff University showed that learning piano can strengthen hand muscles and hand-eye coordination, especially in children with reduced motor skills. It is evident that playing the piano is a beneficial skill for children, but many students in various countries do not have the opportunity to do so...

The Current State of COVID-19 in Haiti

The current state of COVID-19 in Haiti remains dire. As of November 21st, the CDC has declared the situation in Haiti a Level 4, indicating a very high level of COVID-19. In the past month, there have been 1,362 reported new cases and 53 deaths. Compared to the record high of 4,263 new cases reported in June 2020, the current number of cases is lower but still worrisome...

Why We Volunteer

As ITIAH Angels for Learning (IAFL) finishes off another successful year, we decided to honor the group of people who make this success possible- our volunteers. Volunteers are vital to the success of any non-profit organization as they assist with marketing, fundraising, and program delivery in their free time, with no expectations beyond giving to communities in need. IAFL’s success can be attributed to the hard work of its volunteers in areas of medicine, marketing, fundraising, website development, STEM, etc. In this month’s issue of the newsletter, the IAFL Marketing Manager- Christina Franco- and the IAFL writing team wrote to us about their reasons for contributing to the IAFL educational and health goals in Haiti...

Season’s Greetings

Everyone at ITIAH Angels for Learning (IAFL) wishes you and your family a safe, fun, and happy holiday! In the midst of all the holiday cheer, it is important to remember that some are struggling more than others. We must think of others in their time of need and a donation of any kind would certainly help the children of Haiti. It is crucial that going into the New Year, we are able to help them continue their education which will lead to greater successes for them in the future...
