Message from the Founder

Dear Friends,

In the spirit of American heart month that is filled with love and compassion, we are grateful to spotlight those who have made an impact on Itiah Angels for Learning’s mission. I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who has donated so far this year. Without your encouragement, the work that our volunteers are doing to create sustainability in a part of the world that is highly chaotic would not be possible.

With this edition of the newsletter, we will be learning about the challenges the students face in order to get to school and how together, we are making a difference to help them focus on learning. We implore you to please read the articles. The topics are researched and written by our student newsletter volunteers.

We wish to spotlight food insecurities that the girls are facing at this time with regards to Food insecurities, their need for good walking shoes. We also want to address the need to equip each  student with a tablet so they can continue their school work when the streets are too dangerous to navigate.

One last note, in July, we will be celebrating the fifth anniversary of Itiah Angels for Learning. The celebration “Gala of Angels” will be held in Princeton, New Jersey, home of one of the oldest colleges in the country. We hope we can count on your participation by attending and becoming a sponsor or patron for the event.

Please keep an eye out for more information on the upcoming Gala, our “Love is in the Air Meet & Greet” event to learn how to sponsor a girl which is being held at Cafe Du Pain in Lawrenceville and our participation at the 10th Annual Black History Celebration on Saturday, February 25, 2023 from 3 to 8 PM at Lawrence High School.  We wish you a happy Valentine’s Day! Enjoy Superbowl Sunday!

Sincerely,

Marie Thadal

Good Shoes for Walking Souls

Itiah Angels for Learning (IAFL) is planning a shoe drive for the students at the Ecole Mere Louise elementary school in Haiti. Many students walk several miles to school. Their long commute is often made more difficult with ill-fitting or worn out shoes. Providing these students with a new pair of shoes will help support their learning by making their journey to school easier...

Steps to Education, Still Far for Many Haitian Kids
Imagine a 6-year-old American or European child waking up in the morning to get ready for school. One parent may prepare a meal, ready the child for school, and wait at the corner of the house for the school bus to arrive. Now, imagine another child of the same age from Haiti, who wakes up in the morning and readies for school. This child wears a school uniform, and instead of waiting for a bus, must embark on an arduous journey of walking for at least 2 hours to reach the nearest school. This is an average day in the life of a 6-year-old, school-going Haitian child...
