New UofT Building To Host Future Home For NMC

The nine-storey building will be designed by world-renowned architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the firm behind New York City’s High Line and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston.

The building will house a number of academic units from the Faculty of Arts & Science, including History, Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations, as well as the Institute of Islamic Studies, an arm of the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies and the Archaeology Centre. It will also provide facilities for the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Music

NMCGSA 23rd Annual Graduate Symposium

The NMCGSA invites you to its 23rd annual symposium on March 4th at the Multi-Faith Centre, main activity room (second floor). Join us for a day of presentations given by graduate students from various departments at the University of Toronto, as well as other universities from around the world. A formal reception will take place at 5 pm in the Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations department building in the conference room.

NMC Ph.D Candidate Featured in Over 70 Publications

Congratulations to NMC Ph.D candidate Tracy Spurrier who had her research featured in over 70 different publications this month including the Toronto Star, National Post, and Globe & Mail

Professor Todd Lawson Publishes New Book

Congratulations to NMC Professor Emeritus Todd Lawson on the publication of his new book entitledTafsir as Mystical Experience: Intimacy and Ecstasy in Quran Commentary Tafsīr Sūrat al-Baqara by Sayyid ʿAlī Muḥammad Shīrāzī, The Báb (1819-1850)

The Department of Near and  Middle Eastern Civilizations together with the Department of Linguistics and the Arabic Linguistics Society are delighted to announce that the 33rd Annual Symposium on Arabic Linguistics will be held at The University of Toronto-St. George Campus, April 5-7, 2019.

Program Exploration Days

Ofelia Tychon (left), Sarah McMillan (right), and Stanley Klassen represented NMC at the Faculty of Arts & Science Program Exploration Days held in the Sidney Smith Commons on January 28, 2019. It was an opportunity for current U of T students to learn first-hand about classes and the various programs offered by the Department from our staff and students.

Orthodox Christian Students Association Organizes Volleyball Fundraiser for NMC

Thank you to the Orthodox Christian Students Association for organizing a fundraising volleyball tournament dedicated to supporting NMC.

On behalf of the students, Father John Boutros and Dr. Helene Moussa presented NMC with a donation of nearly $3,000 to help build the endowment for Coptic Studies at U of T.


NMC-CESI Auction

The NMC Cultural Exchange and Support Initiative will be hosting an auction on March 2, 2019 to help raise funds to support Syrian refugee camps.

Sweater Payments Due

Sweater time is almost here! The NMCSU is now collecting money for all sweater orders previously made. Money is being accepted until next Friday, March 8th, 2019. Please make sure to pay within this time period to receive your sweater on time. 

Money can be sent via etransfer, to, or dropped off via cheque or cash to the NMCSU office during operating hours. If leaving cash or a cheque, be sure to leave it with Carly Whitfield, Assistant to the Chair and Undergraduate Administrator. 
If sending an etransfer, please make the password for any required security questions:  uoftnmcsu
The sweaters are $40 each. 
Completed sweaters are expected very soon, as orders are simply being finished up in the bookstore.
