Kids' Night In/Adults' Night Out!

Whether you're looking for a few extra hours of time to prep for the holidays or an adults-only night out, we've got the solution for where to send your child(ren)!  We're offering two "Don't Judge a Book By Its Movie" events this month.  Full details are on our website but we'll be hanging out Friday, December 7th AND Thursday, December 20th.  Each evening includes story time, snacks, crafts, and a movie, plus the two hours of kid-free time you receive.  Pajama's and blankets welcomed.  The cost is $25 per child with a sibling discount of $5 for each additional child you register.  You can register online or in-store (come see me in-store to receive the sibling discount); space is limited.

Santa Claus is coming to town and he's stopping by the bookstore before heading back to the North Pole to finish Christmas Eve preparations!  Come visit with Santa from 4-7pm December 8th.  You may take pictures with Santa during your visit.  We'll have a Christmas themed story time starting at 3:30pm, and of course there will be cookies!
Friday, December 14th we're hosting a conversation on essential oils!  Join me as April and Minda share information about the role of essential oils in every day life and the benefits of using essential oils.  The conversation is FREE and attendees will have the option to participate in a make-and-take portion.  The make-and-take component will have a small fee ($5 or $10 depending based on choice of oil and choice of product - rollerball or air freshener/pillow spray bottle) to compensate our guests for their supplies and will be paid directly to our speakers.  Registration is REQUIRED and space is strictly limited to 15.
Have you run out of family and friends to tell about that AMAZING book you recently read?  Well join us for our second Read Alot, Wine A Little Book Club on December 8th and tell us about it!  Make recommendations, add to your TBR pile, or just come to hang out.  We'll be gathered, discussing books, sipping wine (non-alcoholic beverages poured as well), and munching snacks.   You are welcomed to drop in for a short while or stay the entire time from 5:30-7pm.  If you purchase or special-order a book that evening based on a recommendation from someone in the group, you'll get 10% off the purchase. (Must be 21 years old or older to be poured wine.  Please have your ID ready.)
Do we have a read for you?! Join us for our ABB Book Club on December 28th from 6-7(ish)pm as we read Oyinkan Braithwaite's debut novel, My Sister, The Serial Killer.  Described as "a darkly comic, hand grenade of a novel about a Nigerian woman whose younger sister has a very inconvenient habit of killing her boyfriends", we're guaranteed a fun night!
Thanks to my Scholastic Rep, we've got cool giveaways for our young readers!  Join us for a variety of kids' events this month to celebrate young bibliophiles.  The purchase of any kids' book on December 8th or 15th enters your child in a drawing to win one of these fun goodies - posters, stickers, journal, magnetic words, and more!
Did you know that we have a bookstore membership program?  For a $30 fee, you are a Member for 12 calendar months and receive 20% off your in-store purchases (excludes events and gift certificates).  Members also receive one free hot beverage per month, a discount on space reservations for book clubs or other meetings, and the chance to write a Shelf Talker.  Each Saturday through Christmas, Members will have Early Bird shopping hours from 9-11am.  You can purchase a Bookstore Membership at any time and it lasts 12 months from the date of purchase.  You can also purchase them as gifts!
Consider gifting that always on the go, traveling book lover in your life with an audiobook.  Choose from 3, 6, and 12 month audiobook gift options.
Book Reviews
Several folks have taken advantage of our Galley Club, reading advance reader copies of books from publishers.  Below is what they have to say about what they've been reading.

Book: When All Is Said
Author: Anne Griffin
Publication Date: March 2019
Within the first twenty pages, you can tell that this book is going to cause your heart to shatter. As you join Maurice for drinks, you become drawn into the story of his life and that of the Dollards. It feels like you are eavesdropping on a private conversation, one that you're not meant to overhear. Maurice tells you of loss, of grief, of ruin, and finally of redemption and amends.
The story of his life is told much like whisky: a dry sense of humor, the burn as it goes down, and finally a smooth finish. This book is meant to be enjoyed slowly, not taken for granted and rushed through without even the time to appreciate it. The writing is lyrical, don't be surprised if you find yourself thinking of an old Irish tune as you read.
It will make you ache for the lost potential of those that are gone too soon, and long for time spent with those you love. As Maurice tries to make amends for all his mistakes and looks back on the great love of his life, you'll find yourself touched at the bittersweetness of it all. As you come to the end, the only thing that you want to do is to hold on to those dear to you. It will make you remember the how precious and fleeting life can be.

Book: Hello, Crabby! (paperback)
Author: Jonathan Fenske
Publication Date: April 2019

You've got to get the other ones!  I want to take it to school to share with my reading partner.

While this next one is not from our Galley collection, it is certainly one I recommend you consider reading.

Book: Long Way Down
Author: Jason Reynolds
Publication Date: October 2017

Have you ever read a book that left you feeling all the feels and for which you worry that your words will not do justice in your attempt to review it?  Good.  Then you know how I'm stressing right now trying to tell you what a must read this book is.  Raw.  Gripping.  Deeply sad.  I mean, cut out your feelings kind of sad.  Privilege.  And how having it can make this the stuff you read about in books and how not having it can make this the stuff you live.  So much more sadness because of that realization.  Masterfully and artfully written.  Crafted, really.  It leaves your emotions stuck in your throat.  It leaves your mind reeling.  It leaves your heart broken.  "...but if the blood inside you is on the inside of someone else, you never want to see it on the outside of them."  How important are the rules?  Is it also a long way up and out of a cycle that traps, breaks, kills?  All the stars.  Hopefully that review impresses upon you the seriousness of the recommendation.  Read. It.

Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.

We have been presented with several amazing opportunities this month to partner with the community and get books in the hands of children!  One of the primary goals that we hope to achieve on a continual basis as an independent bookstore in our community will always be to give back, to be an active member of our community.  We strive to achieve this in various ways.
Through the Indies Give Back Campaign, powered by NY Times Bestselling author Jason Reynolds, and publisher Simon & Schuster, and supported by the American Booksellers Association, we had the opportunity to receive 24 free special edition copies of Ghost to give away to a group of middle school youth in the community.  We were given the chance to purchase additional copies at cost to expand the impact of giving away this spectacular book, and so 48 total books were delivered this week to Walter Johnson Middle School.
Centro Latino is committed to providing a Christian response to the needs of Latinos in the community and seeks to bridge the cultural gap between Spanish and non-Spanish speakers through outreach, advocacy and training.  When their staff reached out to us about getting signed copies of Juan Felipe Herrera's books into the hands of the 50 K-8th grade students enrolled in the program this year, we were honored to join other community partners in making this happen.  Donated copies of Imagine and Jabberewalking were delivered this week to the program in time to place the author signed bookplates inside the covers for the students to receive during their holiday celebration.
Pre-Orders & Special Orders
Did you know? If you don't see the title you're looking for on the shelf when you visit the store, we can place a special order for you.  When you pre-pay for your special order, you'll receive 10% off, and most special orders arrive within 2 business days.

We can also pre-order new release books for you!  Just like you're used to with online book sellers or other bookstores, we can pre-order the titles you're anticipating.  Stop by, let me know the book you can't wait to get your hands on, pre-pay for your order, and then stop by the store the day it releases to pick up the copy you reserved!  You'll receive 10% off your pre-paid pre-order just like you do with special orders.
From impromptu conversations about recommended reads in the children's corner, to lively discussions about great books at Book Club, story time with the Library, and visits from four-legged friends, we are honored to be  your local Independent Bookstore!
I got to meet the 2015-2017 US Poet Laureate, Juan Felipe Herrera as well as poet Aaron Coleman during the Lenoir Rhyne University Visiting Writers Series! #MyJobIsSoCool
