Opening Day: Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who came out on Opening Day and made it a wonderful start to our new adventure!  As those of you who were there know, it was a busy but exciting day.  We enjoyed face painting, di'lishi frozen yogurt, a visit from local author, Parker Broaddus, and visits from local young artists and winners of the NC Young Authors Contest who autographed their contributions to the store copy of the NCRA Anthology.

Visiting Author Events
Morganton author, P. S. Broaddus, will be at the store on Friday, July 13th from 10am until noon.  Broaddus is the author of A Hero's Curse and Nightrage Rising.  He will speak to audience members about his writing journey and then autograph copies of his book.  We still have a few publisher exclusive copies on the shelf that you can pick up ahead of time and have him personalize.  Both books are middle grades novels and feature a unique hero.  Youth and adults will enjoy hearing Broaddus speak, whether you've enjoyed reading his book or are interested in hearing more about his writing journey as you embark on your own, it will be an exciting event.

Valdese native, and self-published author, Austin Helms joins us July 14th at 5:30pm.  Known as a dynamic speaker, Helms will share his writing and self-publication journey with the audience as well as sign copies of his book.  Pick up a copy of his book in store before the event, have it personalized, and gift it to a recent high school graduate headed to college this fall.  Helms's book is packed full of tips and things to remember that he gleaned from his own college experience at UNC Chapel Hill.

Join us on July 20th at 5pm as we welcome Dr. Natalie Spencer, Licensed Professional Counselor and Counselor Educator as she shares her workbook titled "Mindful Practices for Helping Troubled Teens". Dr. Spencer is currently an Assistant Professor at NC A & T University, and following years of experience as a school counselor, she is currently seeing clients in private practice. If you are a middle school or high school counselor, or community/agency-based mental health practitioner (counselor, social worker, human services professional, psychologist) working with teens, then this will be an event you won't want to miss! Dr. Spencer will discuss her book and her writing and publication journey.  She'll have copies for available for purchase and autographing.  These will also make great resources for new counselors and interns you may have joining your team.

ABOUT THE BOOK: The workbook curriculum provides 20 activity-based lessons that combine mindfulness and cognitive behavioral approaches. These can be used flexibly in small groups or with individual students. Techniques are taught to help teens with issues such as self-harm, grief/loss, anger, anxiety, impulse control, decision making, and bouncing back.
July Book Art Club is scheduled for July 19th from 6-7pm.  Register your kiddos here.  We'll read The Lion Inside and then take the story to canvas under the instruction of art educator, Staci Nofziger, owner of Sketch Art Space.  The cost of the event is $25, and participants create a masterpiece they can take home.  A hardcover copy of the book read will be available for purchase for an event special price of $15 (copies bought in store after the event will be the regular $16.99 plus tax retail price).  We can't wait to read and create with your young reader!
Our audiobook partner saw such success with their FREE offer for new Libro.fm members during the month of June that they are extending the offer indefinitely!  This means customers can try their first audiobook from their 100,000+ titles for free and then pay $14.99 / month after the trial month.  Sign up here.
Libro.fm is proud to present the July 2018 audiobook bestseller list that captures what’s selling in independent bookstores nationwide.

Don't Judge a Book by Its Movie

Each month we will read a book and then watch the corresponding movie, followed by a discussion of similarities and differences.  For our July 20th event, we will read The Lorax.  Your kiddos will get a chance to write or draw their findings in a creative way.  Simple snacks will be provided (please indicate any food allergies on the sign up forms each time your child attends).  The July drop-off event runs 7:00-9:00pm and is designed for children ages 5 to 10 years old.  The cost is $25 per child and limited to 15 children.

You can purchase your event ticket here.  Please click the "Add a Note" link once you're in your Shopping Cart and add the name of your child as well as any food allergies that we should be aware of when planning snacks.
Bilingual Storytime
Join us July 14th at 3pm for our first English-Spanish storytime.  Led by volunteer Dina Martin, the group will read through a book in Spanish and then again in English.  What a magnificent way to strengthen language skills!

We would love to offer a regular traditional storytime throughout the week and/or on the weekend.  If you have experience reading to children and a love of books, and would be interested in volunteering once or regularly, please email us.  We would love to have a conversation with you about your interest in launching our storytime program.
