Almost-Summer Overnight

With bocce ball, bubbles, chalk, hopscotch games from around the world, crafts, dinner, and a movie, our Almost-Summer Overnight was a hit! Our youth also enjoyed sharing their thoughts on flowers with the rest of the congregation during the Flower Communion service in the morning. With all the fun we had over weekend, the children in our congregation definitely seem to be ready for summer break!

Worship Matters

We will gather this Sunday, May 26 to worship together with Kevin Daum, who will present “Let's Talk About Whiteness” We hope you will join us.

We’re a predominantly white religious community in a predominantly white city and county. But what is whiteness? What does understanding it have to do with liberation and working towards racial justice? Can we allow ourselves to be both racists-in-recovery and anti-racists-in-training? How might we learn to love ourselves as people-in-process? What helps us stay engaged in the sacred and messy work of building community across differences, for us and for generations after us? Let’s look for ways to live these questions together.

If you happen to miss being in worship, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

UU Youth Garden - May 26

During service this coming Sunday, the RE program is inviting our youth to help plant tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, and more in our UU Youth Garden for the Isabella Community Soup Kitchen. It is recommended that children bring trowels and gardening gloves, although getting a little soil on our hands is never a bad thing!

A Request for Specialty Sunday Leaders!

The RE team is looking for willing congregants to lead an hour-long activity with our youth on select Sundays during service (July 7, July 21, August 4, and August 18). These Specialty Sundays can be filled with stories, baking, finger-painting, playing instruments, singing, yoga, chalking outside, playing with bubbles, a combination of different activities, or anything else you think the children would enjoy! If you are interested in leading a Specialty Sunday or have an activity idea for the children, please email Kendra at re.uufcm@gmail.com.

Welcome to UU Orientation - May 26

This orientation is geared to newcomers, visitors, and those seeking to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and this UU fellowship. It is offered every month on the last Sunday (following worship) at 12:00 p.m. Sessions run approximately ninety minutes.

This is the first in a series of three steps to membership at the UUFCM. For more information or to register for Welcome to UU, contact:
Laura McBride: 989.772.5512 Lmcbride010@gmail.com
or Gisela Moffit: 989.772.1602 gbmoffit@gmail.com

Scrap Metal Drive - May 31 or June 1

We will be having a scrap metal drive on Friday, May 31 and/or Saturday, June 1, depending on the weather. We use the proceeds of this drive to support leadership development of our members and friends. If you have any metal to donate, please contact Laura McBride (989-772-5512; lmcbride010@gmail.com) to arrange drop-off or pick-up.

Infant Pantry Collection - June 2

Donations for the Infant Pantry are collected on the first Sunday of each month. Most needed items are things for baby care - diapers and pull-ups in sizes 4, 5 or 6, creams, shampoos, lotions, and baby food in jars. To donate money, make the check out to CCN (Community Compassionate Network) with memo “Infant Pantry.” Contact Tom Moffit (989-772-1602; moffi1tc@cmich.edu) with questions.

Pizza at the Park - June 2

Parents and guardians of children of all ages: On June 2 after our multigenerational service on love, children and their guardians are invited to join the RE team for pizza and a walk to Island Park for fun at the Spray Park! (weather permitting). Sunscreen, bug-spray, and swimsuits are highly recommended.

UUFCM Garage Sale - Update

Please continue to save anything that we could sell at our garage sale on June 13, 14, and 15 at Norma Bailey’s home. We will also include a plant sale during the event, so think about plants you might be able to donate.  Right now we are in need of saw horses, large boards, and tables; please contact Norma (989-560-3952; baile1nj@cmich.edu) to set up delivery of these items. As soon as her garage is cleaned, we’ll announce when people can bring items over, probably after Memorial Day.

Scammer Alert

The UUA indicates that several UU congregations have reported that their members have received scam emails requesting gift card donations for a charitable cause. UUA recommends that all UU congregations be made aware of this and reminded of the official channels that each congregation uses to accept donations. UUFCM’s official channel is through plate collections and through the mail, and we never ask for donations via e-mail. A good rule of thumb with emails you’re not expecting is to: (1) reach out to the sender through another channel (call, text, visit website) and (2) not click on a link (or send money, gift cards, etc.) without clarifying from the trusted source.

Lay Pastoral Care

During our transition, we will offer Lay Pastoral Care to anyone who is going through a difficult time. Gisela Moffit heads the Arms Around team, which provides transportation to doctor appointments, cards/emails/phone calls, preparing and delivering food for those recuperating. Carolyn Hancock will provide lay pastoral care for those who are hurting and need to talk to a caring person one-on-one. Contact Carolyn at 517-881-6006 for an appointment.
