eNews for Thursday, October 3

Worship Matters

We will gather this Sunday, October 6 to worship together with our minister, Drew Frantz, who will present “Belonging” Please join us!

Humans are social creatures, so having a sense of belonging is something that we all want. Hopefully, belonging does not mean excluding others. How can we foster a greater sense of belonging here in our Fellowship, and how can we see this issue in a society that is increasingly divided?

If you happen to miss being in worship, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

Give to CMU Public Media, Help the UUFCM

We are once again collecting for CMU Public Media. In the fall, we pool our resources together in order to purchase air time on CMU Public Radio. Depending on the amount gathered, we get 1-2 ads per week for a good part of the year. Please make your check to “CMU Public Media” and give it to Mary Alsager. Together we do great things!

First Friday Potluck - October 4

Join us for our First Friday communal nosh! George Lentz is hosting, with the theme of 'The Despair of Fall.' The potluck begins at 6:30 p.m. - helping hands are welcome at 6:15 p.m. to assist with set-up preparations. We will also be celebrating the October birthdays of Grace Rollins, Joyce Henricks, Michelle Gawne, Anna VanArsdaleHoot, Tanith Bass, and Chris Bailey.

Infant Pantry Collection - October 6

Donations for the Infant Pantry are collected on the first Sunday of each month. Most needed items are things for baby care - diapers and pull-ups in sizes 4, 5 or 6, creams, shampoos, lotions, and baby food in jars. To donate money, make the check out to CCN (Community Compassionate Network) with memo “Infant Pantry.” Contact Tom Moffit (989-772-1602; moffi1tc@cmich.edu) with questions.

UUFCM Book Club - October 9

The book club has changed our meeting day and time. Starting in October we will be meeting the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 1:00 PM in the Fellowship hall. The October selection is March by Geraldine Brooks. The book won the Pulitzer Prize in 2006. Sue Monk Kidd said, “filled with love and marriage and with the power of war upon the mind and heart of one unforgettable man.” It tells of Louisa May Alcott's father's experience as an Union Army chaplain.

UU Women’s Group Meeting - October 17

We will be starting a UU Women’s Group beginning on Thursday, 6:30 pm, October 17, 2019. Our goal will be to celebrate and learn about womanhood, past, present, and future. We will create a safe place to discuss and process issues around being a woman, while we get to know one another better. Last, we will also find the time to have fun. At the first meeting we will plan more specific goals and objectives together. Jen Prout, Joyce Hendricks and Carolyn Hancock will facilitate this group together. Please text Carolyn at 517-881-6006 if you are interested in attending this group meeting.

Path to Membership Workshop - October 19

This workshop is designed for those who are ready to make the membership commitment to UUFCM. In this interactive session we explore the deeper meanings and expectations of membership and shared ministry; it is a three-hour* session on designated Saturdays (*depending on the size of the group – may be a shorter timeframe if a small group). Refreshments and childcare will be provided. Please let us know one week prior to the class if you need childcare.

“Suppressed – the Fight to Vote”

The Social Justice Coordinating Team is presenting a new film by Robert Greenwald from Brave New Films “Suppressed – the Fight to Vote” on Saturday, October 26, at 7:00 pm. The film chronicles the rampant voter suppression that affected the outcome of the 2018 midterm election in Georgia and the threat it poses to our elections all across the nation in 2020. We will also have available materials for people to register to vote and to apply for an absentee ballot. Bring friends and family members to view the film and engage in this important conversation.

Invitation to Community Justice Party

You are all invited to our third bi-annual Community Justice Party on Saturday, November 2, from 7-9 pm. There will be a program in the sanctuary of music, skits, poetry, and activities highlighting several social justice issues, and then we will meet in the fellowship hall for light refreshments and a rousing cake walk (cake walk tickets 25 cents each, so bring lots of quarters)! The suggested donation for adults is $5 (although more will gratefully be accepted), and children are free (with child care provided for in the nursery if you will let Norma Bailey know that it is needed by Sunday, October 27). And if you have a song or reading or anything else that you would like to contribute to the program, contact any member of the Social Justice Coordinating Team – Norma Bailey, Joyce Henricks, Jen Prout, Sara Prussing, Candi Tomlinson, or Katie Zapoluch. This was a highlight event two years ago, so be sure to have it on your calendar!

Social Justice Interest Survey

While the UUFCM Social Justice Coordinating Team regularly announces events and needs through the e-News, the bulletin board in the fellowship hall, the order of service and on our Facebook page, we would also like to directly alert members and friends who might have an interest in a specific issue. To this end, we ask that you fill out this survey if you haven’t already and submit a hard copy to any of the members of the committee or e-mail your completed survey to Norma Bailey at baile1nj@cmich.edu.
