eNews for Thursday, January 17

Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted.

~ Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Important All-Congregation Retreat

On Saturday, January 26, we will have our annual all-congregation retreat, starting with a hot breakfast served at 8:30 and the interactive retreat following from 9-12.  Because we are a self-governing congregation and because we will be making decisions about our direction forward after Dawn’s departure on January 31, it is very important that all voices be heard and that every vote counted. All members and friends will be contacted directly by a Board member to answer any questions you might have and to get your RSVP. We hope you'll do everything you can to answer in the affirmative. We'll see you there!

Path to Membership Workshop - January 19

This workshop is designed for those who feel ready (or even somewhat ready) to make the membership commitment to UUFCM. In this interactive session we explore the deeper meanings and expectations of membership and shared ministry; it is a three-hour session beginning at 1:00 p.m. (depending on the size of the group – may be a shorter timeframe if a small group). Refreshments and childcare will be provided. Please let us know one week prior to the class if you need childcare. For more info or to register for the workshop contact:
Laura McBride (989.772.5512; Lmcbride010@gmail.com), or
Gisela Moffit (989.772.1602; gbmoffit@gmail.com)

Worship Matters

Please join us this coming MLK Sunday, January 20 as we gather in worshipful community together…with a message from our minister titled “The No That Makes Possible Each Yes.”

Sometimes the only way to yes is no. The only way to freedom is no…I mean saying yes, out loud, to the fragile beauty of everything…
We do it all the time, this “no and yes,” so valiantly, in small and humble, miraculous ways, little revolutions. We look at the world as it is, and suddenly glimpse the world as it could be and then we can’t go back. We move through the patterns, traditions, the habits of things as they are, as if they were immutable, intractable, and then by grace or will or luck we wonder, “But what if…?” You’ve known this. You’ve seen it. You have lived this maybe more than once: unanticipated but deliberate transformation. Unexpected power.

     ~ Victoria Safford

You can read more about our monthly theme as well as explore some supplemental resources here. And if you happen to miss being in worship on any given Sunday, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

January 27: “Precious Stones on the Road”

Fellowship Life Meeting - This Sunday

On the third Sunday of every month – immediately following our worship service – the UUFCM Board holds a brief Fellowship Life meeting to update the congregation on current happenings, plans and/or concerns within the congregation. The intention is for the meetings to be kept brief; the hope is for extended conversation to take place following the meeting during the coffee hour time. Please plan to attend.

Special Plate Collection This Sunday - ICRH

The January special collection on Sunday, January 20, is for the Isabella County Restoration House, the agency providing temporary shelter for their guests - the homeless population in Isabella. In addition to providing dinner and overnight housing, ICRH also provides a day shelter so that their guests can get out of the cold while waiting for the shelter to open for the evening as well as meet with a social worker to plan their path to self-sufficiency. If you prefer to write a check, please address it to: ICRH.

RE Service Project - January 20

On Sunday, January 20th at 12:00 pm at the church, the RE Team has organized a service project benefiting two residents in need at Green Acres Assisted Living (1805 E Remus Rd, Mt. Pleasant). We would like to invite all the children to help us make fleece tie-blankets to help some elderlies stay cozy warm this winter. For little ones who haven't quite mastered the skill of tying knots, we would certainly appreciate their help with decorating cards to give to the residents! After we finish our blankets and cards, kiddos and their guardians will have the opportunity to go to the facility around 1:00 pm to distribute blankets and cards to the residents. Please email Kendra at re.uufcm@gmail.com if you are interested in helping distribute and would need a ride.

Farewell Celebration

Sunday, January 27 will be our last worship service with our minister, and we are having a party to celebrate her time with us immediately after the service. Could you help us with refreshments? We are thinking of an assortment of finger foods (sweet or savory). Please bring them ready to serve. There will be a sign up sheet in the social hall this Sunday. Thanks for your assistance.

Welcome to UU Orientation

This orientation is geared to newcomers, visitors, and those seeking to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and this UU fellowship. It is offered every month on the last Sunday (following worship) at 12:00 p.m. Sessions run approximately ninety minutes. For more info or to registe, contact: Laura McBride (989.772.5512; Lmcbride010@gmail.com) or Gisela Moffit (989.772.1602; gbmoffit@gmail.com)

Dawn’s Final Week Schedule

Following her final worship service with us on Sunday, January 27, Dawn plans to spend her remaining days with us doing the necessary work of cleaning out her office and expressing any yet unconveyed messages of gratitude and goodbyes. If you would like to schedule time to meet with Dawn during her last week here, please contact her to make an appointment (to ensure private time with her) or you can drop by the church during any of the following hours and chat with her as she packs:
Tuesday 10am-2pm
Wednesday 1pm-4pm

Directory Update

We are in the process of updating the Directory - please help us by checking the online directory to see if your entry is still correct. The directory is password protected - it is the same as last year, but instead of 18, it is 19 at the end. Did you have a new postal or email address, a new phone number, a new spouse or child? If so, contact Gisela Moffit ASAP. Thank you for your help with our new directory project.

Last Photo Op!

Sunday, January 20 will be the last opportunity to get your photo taken after church for the new directory. If you do not want to have your picture taken, just let us know. If you want to submit one of your own, please email it directly to our Administrative Assistant. Deadline for submissions is January 30.

On Saturday, February 16, from 6-10 p.m. at Jameson Hall (just east of Isabella Road off Pickard on Bud Street), all members, friends and guests of UUFCM are invited to a family dance. There is no cost other than there will be a basket at the door to accept donations to cover the rental of the building. Bring your own snacks and non-alcoholic beverage if you would like. The DJ would like to set up the play list ahead of time, so if you have any requests of music that you would like to dance to, please send or give your list to Norma Bailey (baile1nj@cmich.edu) or Jen Prout (poutyprouty66@yahoo.com). Polish up those dancing shoes!
