eNews for Wednesday, May 16

Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted.
~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

Worship Matters

This Sunday, May 20, we will continue our exploration of what it means to be a people of creativity with a message titled “Eureka!” by the Rev. Kim Crawford Harvie. Our worship leader will be Laura McBride with Kevin Daum serving as worship associate. We hope you will join us!

“We know we can’t control the arrival of insight; it doesn’t respond to ordinary commands. But it can be coaxed… For those of us who prize tenacity, it turns out that diversion is really important. It’s about incubation.
Our addiction to constant stimulation, ... hyper-connectedness, [and]
hyper-availability [are] all enemies of insight. Instead, standing in line, waiting in traffic, or tasks that demand minimal intellectual firepower,
such as dishes or laundry, can be “repurposed” for creativity, commandeered for inspiration. Realizing a great idea “could [also] be as simple as a little solitude,” minimizing the distractions that might be keeping an insight
from surfacing…”     ~ Kim K. Crawford Harvie

You can read more about our monthly theme as well as explore some supplemental resources here. And if you happen to miss being in worship on any given Sunday, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

RE News

We need volunteers!

The summer RE program relies on volunteers to help in the garden, assist with lessons, and provide nursery care as needed. We will need two people per Sunday, with no maximum number of Sundays you can volunteer for! Anna will have a sign up sheet available Sundays after service, or you can email her at vanar1ae@cmich.edu. Please let her know if you have any questions.

Results of Our Annual Meeting

At our annual meeting on Sunday, May 13, we thanked retiring trustees of the UU Board (Chris Bailey, Ricky Courlander, Joyce Henricks, Ethan Kolek, and Laura McBride) and elected six new trustees – Carol Rard as president-elect, Terrie Robbie as treasurer, Jen Prout as assistant treasurer, Janis Shinn for a 2-year term, Aaron Jones for a 1-year term, and Carolyn Hancock to fulfill the second year of Joyce Henrick’s 2-year term. We also approved the 2018-2019 budget and recognized the volunteer efforts of so many people who contribute the people-power to keep the church moving forward. Special recognition this year went to Aaron Jones for gracing us with his technological skill which enhances our worship services, Joyce Henricks who has led our Restoration House efforts for the past several years, and Glenn Lewandos who has led our safe church policy development committee regarding fire, tornados and outside assailants.

Rename Congregational Life Ministry Team!

The Congregational Life Ministry Team (CLMT) made up of membership, Arms Around program, communication, stewardship, social fun, and building/grounds is looking for a new name! It's an unwieldy name for an interesting group of programs. We are collecting suggestions for renaming this team. A prize for the name selected will be given. Please send your suggestions to Gisela Moffit, Team Leader at gbmoffit@gmail.com. Names will be collected until June 30 and chosen at the July CLMT meeting.

Safety Information

The UUFCM Board recently established a Safety Task Force to assist us in developing policy and procedures for safety measures needed in the event of dangerous circumstances that may result via nature and/or human intent. Be aware that as we work to become a more safety-conscious congregation, you will be seeing some changes to help make us safer from fire, tornados, and potential assailants. Please take the time to read the article “Sunday Security” on page 40 in the Spring 2018 issue of UU World magazine. It explains how the UUA and individual congregations are becoming more safety proactive.
