Earth Day/Easter/Stewardship Sunday 2019

Parents and children enjoyed a wonderful afternoon on Sunday with an Easter egg hunt, robot coding, rock painting, chalking, and playing with bubbles! It was a great way to spend our Easter/Earth Day/Stewardship Sunday. More photos below!

Worship Matters

We will gather this Sunday, April 28 to worship together with Joyce Henricks, who will present “Are You Living a ‘Good Life’?” We hope you will join us.

What makes a good life? Many people consider wealth (enough money to afford material things), and the health to enjoy them, to constitute a good life. But is that enough? Is it even relevant to a good life? Writers ranging from Aristotle to the Dali Lama to Charles Schultz have something to say on the question. What do you think?

If you happen to miss being in worship, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

Upcoming Services

May 5: Religious Naturalism: A UU Path and a Personal Path, by Jim Dealing
May 12: When Bad Things Happen to Other People, by Guy Newland

Special Offering Collection - April 28

This Sunday a special plate collection will be taken to supplement the minister’s discretionary fund, a fund we use to help people in the community who might need gas money, money to pay an electric bill, a night in a hotel, etc. While we have a line item in our budget, it does not suffice for the needs like this in the community, which is why we take a special plate collection to supplement the fund. Checks for this fund should be made out to UUFCM with “Discretionary Fund” indicated in the memo line.

Stewardship Drive 2019-2020

We had a wonderful “Eggcellent Celebration” on Sunday, April 21, for our Easter, Earth Day, Stewardship Sunday! Ozobots, watercolor painting, rock painting, massages, meditation, postcard writing, an Easter egg hunt plus more were enjoyed by everyone, including a delicious luncheon!  See pictures.
If you were unable to attend and yet wish to pledge for the 2019-2020 year, please either bring your pledge form to church this Sunday to give to Terrie Robbie or Norma Bailey or mail it to Terrie Robbie, Treasurer at PO Box 41, Mt Pleasant, MI 48804-0041. The complete stewardship packet is available online, and forms will also be available at the church on Sunday.

Fellowship Life Meeting - April 28

On the third Sunday of every month – immediately following our worship service – the UUFCM Board holds a brief Fellowship Life meeting to update the congregation on current happenings, plans and/or concerns within the congregation. The intention is for the meetings to be kept brief; the hope is for extended conversation to take place following the meeting during the coffee hour time. This meeting will include the opportunity for questions about the proposed changes to our by-laws.  Please plan to attend.

Welcome to UU Orientation - April 28

This orientation is geared to newcomers, visitors, and those seeking to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and this UU fellowship. It is offered every month on the last Sunday (following worship) at 12:00 p.m. Sessions run approximately ninety minutes.

This is the first in a series of three steps to membership at the UUFCM. For more information or to register for Welcome to UU, contact: Laura McBride: 989.772.5512
or Gisela Moffit: 989.772.1602

Young Adult Potluck - April 28

We gather to share a meal and engage in conversation and some game-playing or video watching (or whatever strikes our fancy) on the Last Sunday of the month at 5:30 p.m. in the UUFCM Social Hall. A main dish will be provided, all others may bring a snack/side dish/dessert to pass. But if you're short on time or energy to bring something, don't worry - please come anyway!

CUUPs Celebrates Beltane - April 28

Beltane is a time to celebrate fertility and the greening of the earth, to honor the arrival of spring and new life. We invite those of you who are interested in participating in this ritual to bring an item of food or drink to share at the potluck that follows the ceremony. We will gather at 6:30 pm and begin our ceremony promptly at 7:00 pm.

First Friday Potluck - May 3

Carolyn Hancock and Deb Allore will be hosting with a theme of Spring – A New Beginning. Let's celebrate spring with your favorite fresh foods or your favorite dish of any kind! We will also be celebrating the May birthdays of Scott Daigle, Cynthia Damer, Susan Powers, Kate Swier, Larry Hall, Stacy Guthrie, and Mary Alsager. The potluck begins at 6:30 p.m. - helping hands are welcome at 6:15 p.m. to assist with set-up preparations.

Path to Membership Workshop - May 4

This workshop is designed for those who feel ready (or even somewhat ready) to make the membership commitment to UUFCM. In this interactive session we explore the deeper meanings and expectations of membership and shared ministry; it is a three-hour session beginning at 1 p.m. (may be a shorter timeframe if a small group). Refreshments and childcare will be provided. Please let us know one week prior to the class if you need childcare. For more info or to register for the workshop contact:
Laura McBride (989.772.5512;, or
Gisela Moffit (989.772.1602;

Infant Pantry Collection  - May 5

Donations for the Infant Pantry are collected on the first Sunday of each month. Most needed items are things for baby care - diapers and pull-ups in sizes 4, 5 or 6, creams, shampoos, lotions, and baby food in jars. To donate money, make the check out to CCN (Community Compassionate Network) with memo “Infant Pantry.” Contact Tom Moffit (989-772-1602; with questions.

Baby Shower - May 5

On Sunday, May 5 immediately following the service we will have a baby shower for Charles Kenneth Emerick, son of Matthew and Elaine Emerick. Charlie was born March 1, a week before our originally scheduled baby shower! Now we are looking forward to getting acquainted with him and celebrating his life and gifts.

If you would like to help preparing the party, let Kris Los know; if you want to donate some money for a gift from the congregation, make a check out to Gisela Moffit (baby shower on subject line). They are registered at Amazon and at Target in case you want to pick out a gift from your family.

UUFCM Book Club - May 22

The book club voted on our next read. It is the award winning book “The Sparrow” by Mary Doria Russell. Is it science fiction or a philosophical genre? Nancy Pearl summarizes as “the nature of good and evil. What happens when a man tries to do the right thing, for the right reasons and ends up causing incalculable harm?” Come join us May 22nd at 12:30 and bring your lunch. Normally we meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month but for this month only we will meet on the 4th Wednesday.

Application for Minister

If you would like to read the application materials that your Transition Team prepared and sent to start our application process for our new minister, two copies are available for you to look at near the name tags below the memorial tree. Please do not remove them from the church.

Lay Pastoral Care

During our transition, we will offer Lay Pastoral Care to anyone who is going through a difficult time. Gisela Moffit heads the Arms Around team, which provides transportation to doctor appointments, cards/emails/phone calls, preparing and delivering food for those recuperating. Carolyn Hancock will provide lay pastoral care for those who are hurting and need to talk to a caring person one-on-one. Contact Carolyn at 517-881-6006 for an appointment.

Save for This Year’s Garage Sale

As you are doing any early spring housecleaning and come across items you could donate to our biannual garage sale to be held this spring, please hold on to them for the time being.
