Worship Matters
Please plan to join us for worship this coming Sunday, August 12 as we continue our Summer Worship Series “Sharing the Stories of Living Our Faith.” Our minister will be leading the service with the reflection for the morning being shared by Jen Prout.
“To have faith requires courage, the ability to take a risk, the readiness even to accept pain and disappointment. Whoever insists on safety and security as primary conditions of life cannot have faith; whoever shuts off in a system of defense, where distance and possession are the means of security, becomes a prisoner… The practice of faith and courage begins with the small details of daily life.”
~ Eric Fromm
You can read more about our monthly theme as well as explore some supplemental resources here. And if you happen to miss being in worship on any given Sunday, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

August 19: Service Leader: Dawn Daniels, with a reflection by Mel Bailey
Summer Worship Series Resources
Our worship series this summer has led to some provocative questions regarding what faith is within the Unitarian Universalist context – what do we mean as UUs when we talk about faith, when we describe ourselves as a faith tradition? I’m in the process of pulling together the collection of quotes, readings, and personal reflections that have so far been shared this summer, plus some we haven’t explored yet. But for today I want to recommend two book titles to you, for any of you who are interested in reflecting more deeply on some of these faith-related questions we’ve been raising:
I look forward to our continued faith explorations together! ~ Dawn
Directory Updates
If you have changed your phone, postal address or email account, please let us know by this Sunday, August 12! We'll be printing our August update to our Directory the following week. Send your information changes to our Administrative Assistant, Kirsten Keeton, or tell Gisela Moffit. Thank you!
Fellowship Life Meeting - Sunday, August 19
On the third Sunday of every month – immediately following our worship service – the UUFCM Board holds a brief Fellowship Life meeting to update the congregation on current happenings, plans and/or concerns within the congregation. The intention is for the meetings to be kept brief; the hope is for extended conversation to take place following the meeting during the coffee hour time. Please plan to attend.
Make Joyful Noise!
The Joyful Noise Choir will begin rehearsals for the fall on Wednesday, August 22, at 7:00 p.m. If you like to sing, even if you don’t read music, now would be a perfect time to join us as we are beginning to learn new music! Contact Norma Bailey at 989-560-3952 or baile1nj@cmich.edu if you have questions.
Veggies from George
George Lentz has a bountiful harvest of vegetables and is willing to share them. Right now he has peppers, eggplant, kale, Swiss chard, cabbage, and the tomatoes are coming on fast. If you would like to get some of these veggies, just call George at 248-346-4039 to make arrangements to come out and pick.
A Way to Raise Your Voice
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has proposed changes to the K-12 social studies curriculum. The new standards would eliminate any mention of LGBT rights, the NAACP, Roe v. Wade, climate change and “core democratic values.” The final draft version of the Social Studies Standards: 2007 to 2018 Side-by-Side Comparison is available for review and online public comment until September 30, 2018. Even if you are not a social studies teacher, you know what you would like your children or grandchildren to be learning, so the Social Justice Coordinating Team encourages you to take time to read the proposed standards and comment!

and the more faithful you are. Faith is not to disconnect you from
reality - it connects you to reality.
