eNews for Thursday, December 20

Those who stand at the threshold of life always waiting for the right time
to change are like the man who stands at the bank of a river waiting for
the water to pass so he can cross on dry land.

~ Joseph B. Wirthlin

RE Caroling

Sunday was filled with lots of smiles and songs at Green Acres.
Thank you to all our wonderful carolers for bringing some holiday cheer
to the Green Acres residents!

Worship Matters

We hope you will join us as we gather for worship this Sunday, December 23, with a message from our minister titled “The Gift of Threshold Moments.”

The proper name for the experience of unknowing is not mysticism but wisdom. When Socrates was told that the Oracle of Delphi said he was the wisest man in Greece, he replied that it could only mean he knew what he did not know. Wisdom comes from the certain knowledge of our ignorance, and it teaches us that we dwell within a small circle of light surrounded by an immense mystery. According to tradition, the owl - the symbol of Athena, the goddess of wisdom - spreads its wings only with the arrival of dusk
     ~ Sam Kee

You can read more about our monthly theme as well as explore some supplemental resources here. And if you happen to miss being in worship on any given Sunday, the texts to previous sermon messages (and some of the readings as well) can be found in our website sermon archive.

CUUPs Celebrates Yule - December 23

Yule, the winter solstice, is a time of great symbolism and power. It marks the return of the sun, when the days finally begin to get a little longer. It's also a time to celebrate with family and friends, and share the spirit of giving. We invite those of you who are interested in participating in this ritual to bring an item of food or drink to share at the potluck that follows the ceremony. We will gather at 6:30 pm and begin our ceremony promptly at 7:00 pm.

Welcome to UU Orientation - Sunday, December 30

This orientation is geared to newcomers, visitors, and those seeking to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and this UU fellowship. It is offered every month on the last Sunday at noon. Sessions run approximately 90 minutes.
For more information, contact Laura McBride (989-772-5512;

Year End Donations

Your Social Justice Coordinating Team would like to suggest that your donations in the holiday and end-of-year giving season be given to meet local, national, and global needs with a focus on advocacy for change locally, nationally, and internationally for global justice and peace. We believe that our donations should not only provide balm for the wounds of injustice but also should change the conditions that create injustice and poverty. We have created a document with further information and some suggested organizations that support justice.

First Friday Potluck - January 4

Laura McBride is hosting, and the theme is Comfort Foods. The potluck begins at 6:30 p.m. - helping hands are welcome at 6:15 p.m. to assist with set-up preparations. We will also be celebrating the January birthdays of Janis Shinn, Elizabeth Dealing, Mel Bailey, Aaron Calhoun, Joe Dumas, Whitley Webster, Stacey Pattison, Doris Hall, Dawn Daniels, Jennifer Davis, and Annette Pratt.

Infant Pantry Collection - Sunday, January 6

Donations for the Infant Pantry are collected on the first Sunday of each month. Most needed items are things for baby care - diapers and pull-ups in sizes 4, 5 or 6, creams, shampoos, lotions, and baby food in jars. To donate money, make the check out to CCN (Community Compassionate Network) with memo “Infant Pantry.” Contact Tom Moffit (989-772-1602; moffi1tc@cmich.edu) with questions.

Important Retreat on Saturday, January 26 - Save the Date!

On Saturday, January 26, we will have our annual all-congregation retreat.
While always a valuable gathering, this retreat will be extremely important as we will be making decisions about our direction forward in light of Dawn’s departure on January 31. A hot breakfast will be served at 8:30, and the retreat will occur from 9-12. All members and friends are encouraged to attend.

MidAmerica Regional Assembly - Save the Date

The MidAmerica Regional Assembly will be held in St. Louis, Missouri, April 5-7, 2019. The keynote address will be presented by UUA President, Susan Frederick-Gray, and there will be multiple workshops. If you are interested in attending (with support from the Fellowship), contact Norma Bailey at 989-560-3952 or at baile1nj@cmich.edu).

I have not ceased being fearful, but I have ceased to let fear control me. I have accepted fear as a part of life, specifically the fear of change, the fear of the unknown, and I have gone ahead despite the pounding in the heart that says: turn back, turn back, you’ll die if you venture too far.
