January 2021 Newsletter

COVID-19

Directors continue to meet virtually, most recently on  January 13.  Updates from the meeting and from projects are covered below.

In light of the Lockdown 3 all volunteer activities have been suspended.  This will be reviewed at the end of January / early February.

Thank you to everyone who came out to help to take down the Christmas decorations.
Buxton Town Team - moving on
 
Following lengthy discussions the BTT Board of Directors has agreed to new slimmed down structure, with a new Action Group to lead on projects (see below).   

The new structure comes in to force from February 1. The scrutiny Group will disband on the same date.

Matthew Nuttall will continue as Chair of the BTT Board, with Steve Bradshaw leading the new Action Group. Derek Bodey will take over as treasurer; Lesley Caddy will represent the Communications Group and take minutes; Kate MacLean to oversee governance and Suzanne Pearson will look after membership.  

Retiring directors - Jim Lowe, John Goddard, Phillip Barton, Simon Fussell and Caitlin Bisknell - were all thanked for the work during their time on the Board. 
BTT Action Group

During lockdown the Town Team Directors took the opportunity to review and refresh how we develop and manage projects.  In particular, we want  to make sure ideas can be developed into projects flexibly and with the minimum delay and bureaucracy. 

To do this we have set up an Action Group with a core membership of a Chair, Steve Bradshaw, and Deputy, Project Leaders and member from the BTT Communications group.

Members are welcome to join, either to share their ideas for new projects or to join in the discussions of existing ones and how they may develop..We hope that all members will feel this is a good development and genuinely hope that everyone will feel welcome. The Action Group will replace the Ideas meetings.

We expect to hold an initial meeting with the core members in the next few weeks to complete the process of establishing the group. 

Meetings will then be opened up to the wider BTT membership - the exact how and when will depend on Covid but we anticipate that initially these meetings will be via Zoom.

Finally, if you are wondering what constitutes a 'Project', then it is very flexible. They should, however, either have the aim of benefitting the prosperity or wellbeing of Buxton. Projects can be supported financially but ultimately, in general, should be cost neutral.
Future High Streets Fund

As you may have in the local Press, High Peak Borough Council has been offered a grant of £6.6m by the Government from its Future High Streets Fund. This a reduction of around a third.compared to the Council's bid.
The Council has until the end of February to submit revised proposals for the scheme in light of the budget reduction. It has already met local groups to discuss how to take the plans forward and further meeting is scheduled for February 8.

Pavilion 150 - your help is needed
August 2021 marks the 150th anniversary of the Pavilion Gardens 

Plans are emerging for ways to celebrate this milestone in the life of this much loved attraction, which I know has been greatly used over the past year for many of us out on our daily exercise.  

Sadly, so far, early far funding bids have been unsuccessful .

If you have any thoughts or ideas about how this event could be marked?  

Would you like to be involved in organising an event?

Clearly any event will need to take into account any Covid restrictions which are in place at the time.

Buxton Market CIC 
One of the early projects which the Town Team five years ago supported, through a loan, was the setting up of Buxton Market CIC. Directors are pleased to report that the loan has now been repaid.

The market is one of the few markets which has continued to open through all the Covid lock downs and has seen an increase in stalls over the last year.

It is now looking to recruit a Team Leader to run the setting up and taking down of market stalls on saturdays and Tuesdays. This is a paid role.
