Dog Days on the Trail
Greetings, Trail lovers,

We often hear about the "dog days" of summer, those sweltering days of July and August when we long for some relief. The origin of that expression is actually found in the stars. This month the ERT has been working hard on a new website and some stunning photography to go along with it. That's meant early morning and late evening photoshoots to beat the heat and capture the perfect light. Luckily, it's also meant quiet moments on the Trail, taking in some of our most beautiful views and stunning glimpses of Sirius, "the dog star" still bright in the morning sky.

These long summer days have filled me with gratitude for this trail, for this community of volunteers who care for it and who've stepped up to be part of our marketing refresh. Make your summer memories here: Tides games at Harbor Park, the cooling fountains at Town Point Park, a sunset kayak trip on our Elizabeth, after work "Trailgrazing" at the many restaurants and breweries along the ERT, and of course a group bike ride that you can be a part of almost any night of the week.

Our new website will make it easier than ever for you to see how you can get involved in the Trail and see what's going on any day of the week. This is your ERT and we couldn't build this trail without you. Consider donating to our annual fund, the Glowline project or the 2022 Elizabeth River Run to help support our mission and make memories.

I'll leave you with this, "Town Point Poem" by Symay Rhodes, soon to appear on the ERT as part of the Trail Poetry Project:
Children at Town Point
Stand in awe of the water
Raining in reverse.

Be well and see you on the Trail,

Elizabeth River Races:
Price Increase August 1!
It's the last weekend in July which means early bird registration for the Elizabeth River Run 10K ends Sunday. Don't miss out! Happening Sunday, September 4, this race has something for everyone. Now in its 43rd year, the Elizabeth River Run includes competitive walking, a one-mile kid's run, and an epic after party featuring live music, pizza, a beer truck and vendors at the gorgeous, private park at the Port of Virginia. This is the only race held exclusively on the Elizabeth River Trail. When you register for this race you're supporting two local non-profits, the Elizabeth River Trail Foundation and Tidewater Striders.

Price increases on August 1st! You can register as part of a corporate group, as an individual or family, help with sponsorship or volunteer on the course. We hope to see you at the ERR this Labor Day weekend!
Virginia Office of Trails
It's an exciting time for Virginia as our state now has its first office of trails and an unprecedented budget dedicated to trail infrastructure. The purpose of the Office of Trails is to build new regional trails and maintain current trails with more connectivity. It is an 8-fold increase to the previous budget allotted for trails in Virginia. No specific trail project received direct money from the $93 million budget but now funding will be dedicated to the many trail projects in Virginia. The ERT is pursuing grant opportunities through the Virginia Recreational Trails Program in hopes to further the mission of the Elizabeth River Trail Foundation.
Glowline Update at Jeff Robertson Park
Crews have been busy pouring concrete and sprinkling glowstone along the ERT section at Jeff Robertson Park. If you missed the front-page article in the Virginian Pilot last week you can read about the project here. Bear with us a bit longer as the detour at the park remains in place for your safety while the project is underway. This unique process requires a 10-day cure time of each section before grinding the poured areas down to reveal the glowing pattern. We anticipate the Trail to be open in early September and can't wait to show off the glow with an epic glow party!
Welcome our Assistant Director
Join us in welcoming Morgan Willett to the Elizabeth River Trail Foundation! Morgan has a passion for environmental stewardship, making an impact on the community through her previous role as the Public Services Coordinator with Keep Norfolk Beautiful. She’s lived in Norfolk for the past seven years and has spent a lot of time enjoying the trail while also serving on the ERT Events Committee for the last four years. Morgan says, "The Trail was how I first got to know my new community, meet people, and get involved. I have loved seeing it grow and the many ways people use it. The trail's future is exciting, and I feel privileged to be a part of it!" Be sure to say hello when you see Morgan on the Trail!

Welcome our new Board Members
The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation is delighted to announce three new board board members elected this past June. Join us in welcoming directors Tim Faulkner, Jackie Glass and Barry Bishop!

“I want to support this organization because the ERT is such an incredible lifestyle amenity for the area. It motivates folks to 'move' and for Norfolk residents to interact with each other.” – Tim Faulkner President & CEO, The Breeden Company

"The ERT is not simply an amenity but a necessity for everyone's health and well-being. I am honored to be a part of the effort to spread awareness and build a public space where people of all races, cultures, and backgrounds can forge common experiences and create greater accessibility to the natural world, especially for those in communities historically separated from these spaces." – Jackie Glass, Virginia State Delegate

“Trails like the ERT offer recreation, health, transportation, environmental and economic development benefits that contribute to an enhanced quality of life. But what makes the ERT so special is that it showcases so much of what makes Norfolk (and the region) such a great place to live, play, start and grow a business.” – Barry Bishop, Community Leader
