Field Operations Supervisor Manuel Colunga received this year's CalPERS Spotlight on Excellence Award.

District Employee Honored as Public Servant of the Year

Manuel Colunga, field operations supervisor for the San Bernardino Valley Water Conservation District, was awarded this year’s CalPERS Spotlight on Excellence Award —- an honor bestowed each year on one outstanding public servant in the state of California. The award was presented Oct. 22 at the California Public Employees’ Retirement System’s Education Forum in Indian Wells. A video, paying tribute to Colunga’s work and volunteerism in the community, was posted on the CalPERS website alongside past recipients of the award.

Seed Collecting in the Wash

The District works with the Inland Empire Resource Conservation District to collect and cultivate seed from native plants in the Wash for use in restoring habitat and to re-vegetate areas temporarily impacted by Plunge Creek project construction. California buckwheat seeds, shown here, are ready to gather in late summer, once the plant's seed capsules dry out.


Groundwater Recharge: Key to California's Water Future

The state's underground basins are capable of storing 500 million acre-feet of water,” said Graham Fogg, UC Davis professor of hydrogeology. “That's like 500 Folsom reservoirs.” He was one of several industry experts to speak at a recent conference on the importance of groundwater recharge to California's future.

Wash at Dawn

San Bernardino Valley Water Conservation District field staff members are out before daybreak, measuring water flow and making sure recharge ponds are performing their critical job. This beautiful sunrise captured by Field Supervisor Manuel Colunga is seen over imported water that has traveled from Northern California and is being used for recharge. Perhaps November will bring us local water to recharge.
