Our friends at Disability Rights NC and Education Justice Alliance are asking for our help to push back against House Bill 247.
DRNC and EJA have requested that you sign the letter on behalf of your organization and/or as individuals so that the General Assembly can see there is a strong and organized base against this bill. PNCC has already signed. We must make it clear that North Carolina cannot continue to implement exclusionary and punitive practices in school discipline policy.
SHORT DESCRIPTION OF BILL H247:
"H247 will roll back progress in school discipline policy by allowing public schools to enact exclusionary discipline policies. Bill sponsors want to implement this policy despite the progress in school discipline data across the state and numerous studies confirming the harms of such exclusionary discipline practices. This policy will increase the total number of long-term suspensions in addition to disproportionately impacting students based on race and disability. In one provision, lawmakers have removed examples of minor conduct that does not amount to serious violations allowing for the long-term suspension of 10 days or more. In another provision, lawmakers aim to include law enforcement in the adoption and governance of student codes of conduct."
