PNCC Needs YOUR Help!

Our friends at Disability Rights NC and Education Justice Alliance are asking for our help to push back against House Bill 247.

Disability Rights NC and Education Justice Alliance, are organizing against a recently filed school discipline bill H247. They are both members with PNCC in the Every Child NC coalition. They have provided a brief description of the bill below and have asked for more organizations and individuals sign this letter demanding that H247 be voted down by the North Carolina General Assembly.
DRNC and EJA have requested that you sign the letter on behalf of your organization and/or as individuals so that the General Assembly can see there is a strong and organized base against this bill. PNCC has already signed. We must make it clear that North Carolina cannot continue to implement exclusionary and punitive practices in school discipline policy.
"H247 will roll back progress in school discipline policy by allowing public schools to enact exclusionary discipline policies. Bill sponsors want to implement this policy despite the progress in school discipline data across the state and numerous studies confirming the harms of such exclusionary discipline practices. This policy will increase the total number of long-term suspensions in addition to disproportionately impacting students based on race and disability. In one provision, lawmakers have removed examples of minor conduct that does not amount to serious violations allowing for the long-term suspension of 10 days or more. In another provision, lawmakers aim to include law enforcement in the adoption and governance of student codes of conduct."
