Leandro "Countdown to Compliance" Updates

October 15, 2021

Hi Friends,
This is our "Week Of Action" for the Countdown to Compliance Campaign with Every Child NC before the hearing on Monday, October 18th. We wanted to send a quick update with the highlights happening this week to be sure you know what's going on and ask you to join as you can!

On September 8th at the Leandro v. NC Court Hearing, Judge Lee requested the FINAL FINAL plan from the State of North Carolina as to how the state will implement the first few years of the 7 year Leandro Plan that the Court adopted earlier this year on recommendation by the West Ed report and the Plaintiffs and Defendants in the case.

PNCC is proud to be involved in these upcoming events including hosting our FIRST BIG IN PERSON EVENT on October 18th, and we NEED YOU THERE!.

We are gathering:

  • to lament the loss of support services and learning opportunities that would have otherwise benefitted millions of children – for each of the 27 years since the Leandro case began.
  • to call on the State Legislature to fulfill its constitutional and moral duties to the children of North Carolina – to give every student what they need to succeed and flourish at school.
  • with our Ecumenical and Interfaith allies who believe that loving our neighbors includes loving children and providing for their educational needs.

WE NEED YOU THERE!! THANK YOU!!!!
PLEASE RSVP http://bit.ly/PNCC1018 to help us plan!

Lunch and Learn: The Moral Imperative To Fund The Leandro Plan (Vigil Info Prep Event)

On Tuesday, October 12th, PNCC joined with the NC Council of Churches and Every Child NC to host a Lunch and Learn on Zoom entitled: The Moral Imperative to Fund The Leandro Plan. This Lunch and Learn featured speakers Kris Nordstrom of the NC Justice Center and Letha Muhammad of the Education Justice Alliance. They discussed what the Leandro v. NC Court Case is, why it matters, and why people of faith need to be paying attention to this important case! They also discussed how the lack of adequate educational opportunities across NC has harmed our most vulnerable students–including our Black, Hispanic, Latinx, and Indigenous children. Catch the Replay here.  Kris' powerpoint is available on our website: http://pastorsforncchildren.org/events/1018-2.

LEGISLATIVE LEDGER -- CALL TO ACTION

NC Belongs to Children Challenge!

This week we invite you to take our "NC Belongs to Children Challenge!" Listen to the song our partner Peter Rawitsch from Wilmington wrote and put together in a video, and then call your Legislators one evening or this weekend and sing the chorus on their office Voicemail AND ask them to fully implement the Leandro Plan! If you have extra time, also call Senate Pro Tempore Phil Berger and Speaker of the House Tim Moore's offices too!

You can also record yourself singing and post it online and tag your representatives and @Pastors4NCKids for our #CountdownToCompliance #NCBelongsToChildrenChallenge! Let's see your support for our state's children!

Not sure who your NC General Assembly Legislators are? Find out here.

Binkley Baptist Rally for Public Education

On Saturday, October 9th, Binkley Memorial Baptist Church in Chapel Hill hosted a Public Education Rally on the church lawn. We are grateful for all who stopped by to pick up one of our "Postcard Parties in a Bag" for Mission Amplify!

On Sunday, October 10th, Binkley also hosted Education Sunday during their 11am Worship service. Executive Director the Rev. Suzanne Parker Miller was the Guest Preacher along with other special guests who joined in the service. Here's the video of the service (Suzanne's sermon starts at 1:12:00) and the Bulletin

Interested in having PNCC visit your congregation? Let us know!

#LEANDRO UPDATES

As part of the Every Child NC Coalition, we are inviting local school boards, county commissioners, and other local government boards to pass the Leandro Plan support statement. A growing list of local school boards, organizations, and local governments have passed it, and we know of more coming up for discussion and votes this week. Please reach out to your elected officials and ask them to support it as well. The wording is already put together and all the details can be found at https://everychildnc.org/local-resolution/. Thank you!
