Updated Certified Heritage Vineyard seal

Launched in April this year, the Certified Heritage Vineyard (CHV) seal is getting a facelift with the addition of a QR code that will direct consumers to the Old Vine Project (OVP) members’ page on the website.

IWC Personality of the Year 2018 award 

Rosa Kruger received the 2018 International Wine Challenge Personality of the Year award for her contribution to the international viticultural landscape and her work on old vines. We are very proud of her!

Feedback from London

The OVP master class and lunch at High Timber was a huge hit, with a number of high-profile industry professionals attending, including Greg Sherwood MW, Jamie Goode (Wine Anorak) and Victoria Mason (Waitrose). Please email Christina if you would like the complete list of attendees.
André and Rosa also met with Jancis Robinson, Julia Harding and Chris Wilson.

Klein Karoo Klassique

Klein Karoo Klassique will be taking place in Oudtshoorn for the 10th time from Thursday 09 to Sunday 12 August 2018.  The OVP will participate as follows:
Liplekker is the communal area where festival goers can enjoy food and wine in a market-style environment.  The OVP will have a separate venue adjacent to Liplekker, serving OVP members’ wines on a long table format.
The Windpomp restaurant will have a pop-up restaurant, which is where André Morgenthal will present an old vine wine tasting on Saturday afternoon at 16:00.
OVP wines will also be offered in a tasting format at the VIP event on the Saturday evening.
Participating wineries will have the opportunity to have their wines for sale as well to festival goers. Please contact André should you wish to participate and to discuss in more detail.

CapeWine 2018

CapeWine 2018 is just around the corner. The OVP will liaise directly with members who are going to be showing their wines on its stand in order to finalise these in the coming weeks. A tasting schedule of the participating wines will be given to all the visiting guests. There will be different themed tastings throughout the day, for example, wines from Piekenierskloof, wines from the Skurfberg, and CHV Chenin Blanc, Cinsault and Pinotage, to showcase all the wines in different flights over the course of the three days. These themes will be finalised in the next few weeks. CapeWine delegates will receive an e-brochure with the tasting program.

The Business of Wine & Food Tourism Conference

André will be a speaker at The Business of Wine & Food Tourism Conference, to be held on 17 October 2018 at Spier in Stellenbosch. The OVP is hosting the evening’s networking event, which starts at 17:30.

The tasting is a free-flow walk-around tasting of OVP members’ wines for 100 wine tourism industry professionals. It will be a three-bottle tasting, also held at Spier, similar to the OVP launch format in April this year. Set-up will start at 16:30.

We have arranged for participating members to have free access to the Conference from 15:30 for the closing comments and wrap up.  The updated program will be live next week.

Felco old vine pruning workshops 

The Felco old vine pruning workshops, held on 05, 11 and 19 July, were well attended, and proved to be very valuable to both farm managers/viticulturist and pruners alike. A total of 38 people attended the three workshops.

"Die OVP snoei dag het die belangstelling in die verskillende aspekte van snoei opgewakker. Ons werknemers bespreek nou snoei kwessies in die wingerd en verstaan op n nuwe vlak die effek van dit wat ons doen. Elkeen van die wat die kurses bygewoon het iets geleer, dit was aangebied in ’n oop leer omgewing waar vrae verwelkom en beantwoord was. Baie werknemers kry nooit die geleentheid om te sien wat die effek van verskillende tegnieke en foute is nie."

"On Wednesday 11 July, Jeff Joubert conducted a pruning session at DeMorgenzon. After a cup of coffee he outlined the basic principles of pruning, before applying these to the decisions one has to make when pruning old vines. The importance of the correct number of buds in correlation with the growth of the vine was stressed and demonstrated in DeMorgenzon's Chenin Blanc vineyard, where managers and pruners had the opportunity to make pruning decisions under Jeff's guidance. Thank you to DeMorgenzon for hosting the session!"

New CHV icon for Platter’s 2019 edition 

In recognition of the vitally important role our heritage vineyards and their unique wines play in the South African viticultural landscape, the Platter’s South African Wine Guide will be adding the CHV icon to OVP members’ certified wines in the upcoming 2019 edition.

There is also growing interest from trade and restaurants to reflect the same.
