From the staff of Lane Tech's student newspaper

School safety is an issue that concerns many Lane students, according to a December Champion poll. After a Jan. 15 Mayoral Candidate Forum, mayoral candidate and activist Ja’Mal Green told The Champion he wants to keep police officers out of schools and maintain public safety by addressing certain problems in communities. Recently, a poll conducted by the Champion found that the top concerns on students' minds were mental health, inclusivity and safety. For each of these topics, Lane students felt the administration was taking steps in the right direction but they still feel that more needs to be done. Editor-In-Chief Alex Burstein and Managing Editor Ruby Thompson go into greater detail on the results of the poll and students’ discussions on the subjects.

Bells are such a seemingly inherent part of our schools that most people don’t think to question their presence. Some people argue that the bells are borne out of the Industrial Revolution, establishing a sort of school-factory pipeline, while others argue it is simply to instill the importance of punctuality in students. Reporter Oliver Gerharz has more on the student perspectives of bells and further information on their history.

Arts and Entertainment

“I found it interesting how the movie showcased the harm of elitism and corruption. Like I said before, all of Miles’s guests have a motive to kill him because all of their careers and success are funded by the tech giant himself. They are all holding onto him for dear life, like leeches, in order to stay on his good side,” writes A & E editor Nina Figurelli in her review of the sequel to “Knives Out”, “Glass Onion”, which is available on Netflix.
