BioCT Statement Opposes Pharma Price Controls

Following Governor Lamont’s budget address to members of the General Assembly, BioCT’ issued the following statement.

Imposing arbitrary mandates on biopharmaceutical innovation, especially in the midst of the worst public health crisis Connecticut and the country have seen in a lifetime, can dry up investment into early stage companies who are innovators in the development of health solutions, and potentially risk lives.

The Connecticut bioscience industry has again shown its critical importance this year, and as we emerge from this pandemic, stifling research and development—which this proposal will do—puts the public and the lives of patients, living with some of the most complex diseases, at risk, not to mention our preparedness for the next pandemic. more

UConn Grows in Stamford with New Data Science Incubator

The University of Connecticut announced the opening of a data science technology incubator in Stamford, the state’s fastest growing city. The 5,685 square-foot facility at 9 West Broad Street adds to UConn’s existing Technology Incubation Program (TIP) locations on the main campus in Storrs and at UConn Health in Farmington.

“We are focused on attracting, supporting, and growing early- to mid-stage startup companies in any data science related field, through the creation of a robust entrepreneurial ecosystem connected to the world-class research capabilities at UConn,” says Radenka Maric, UConn’s vice president for research, innovation and entrepreneurship. “Thanks to the vibrancy of the business community in Stamford and UConn’s strengths in data science and innovation, we’re confident that TIP Stamford will become an engine for new company and job creation.” more

Women in Bio Announces Connecticut Chapter

The Women in Bio board of directors voted unanimously to grant chapter status to the vibrant WIB-Connecticut community. Formerly an extension of the WIB-Metro New York chapter, this region met all requirements to become an official chapter of WIB and was granted full chapter status by the board.

“I am very excited to welcome the Connecticut chapter into WIB,” said President and Board Chair, Kayla Valdes, Ph.D. “The Connecticut life sciences ecosystem has affirmed its footing in the biotech community, and the women who will be leading this new chapter have worked tirelessly to build a strong community of life science leaders with a bright future.”

Connecticut: Where Science Lives

Connecticut Innovations (CI), the state's strategic venture capital arm, has announced a new effort to promote Connecticut’s life sciences ecosystem.

The effort, “Connecticut: Where Science Lives,” highlights the life sciences opportunities in Connecticut and attracts new businesses to the state, while supporting existing businesses. Designed by Primacy, a full-service digital experience agency located in Farmington, the integrated marketing campaign includes a dedicated website; traditional, digital and out of home (OOH) advertising; and social media outreach.

It was prompted by state legislation passed in 2018 to position Connecticut as a leader in life sciences. 

New Business Tools and Features Now Available

Recent enhancements to business.ct.gov are designed to make it easier to find the information and services needed for businesses to launch or continue to grow. New features include:

  • Customizable Resource Center: Centralizes 170 different programs providing financial, technical, and equity-based support for business owners in any stage of their business lifecycle. 
  • Business Dashboard: Users will see a dynamic, content-rich dashboard that cuts down on the time needed to find crucial business information, link companies to state compliance needs, and equip business owners with vital, time-sensitive alerts that can impact their business.
  • Connecticut COVID-19 Content: Users will find the latest updates on the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes point-of-time data with direct access points for deeper exploration of vaccination numbers, positive cases, business and employer resources, and official state guidance.
