Help Protect Existing Asylum Law

Asylum as we know it in the U.S. could be coming to an end. The federal government has proposed two sets of new regulations designed to further limit the basic rights of asylum seekers. There is still time to act!

NEW ASYLUM REGULATIONS: On June 15, the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security jointly released a series of proposed changes to the asylum system that, if implemented, would essentially make it impossible for almost anyone to find safety in the United States. The
161-page document of proposed regulations was published in the Federal Register on June 15 by the Department of Homeland Security and the Justice Department.

THERE'S STILL TIME TO ACT: By law the government must consider public comments to the proposed regulations before finalizing the rules. This is our time to make our voices heard. Please take a few minutes to
submit your comment to the Federal government by the July 15th deadline in opposition to the destruction of our asylum system.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: (
from HIAS)

Before the proposed changes can be finalized, the administration must review each and every unique comment that they receive; your comments are important!

Here’s how:

  • Go to this link to make a comment by July 15th.

  • Draft a comment using the sample language from the HIAS link above. Make your comment unique (don’t just copy and paste) because the system will discard duplicate entries.
