Member Survey

What we do at North Sound Trout Unlimited would not be possible without our incredible membership, so we are genuinely interested in what our members have to say.

This survey helps us figure out where our members want their donations to go, as well as in planning future events and providing valuable educational opportunities.

Please help us out by filling out the NSTU Member Survey. Click here to add your input.
Last Month

We owe a huge thank you to everyone who came out to support North Sound Trout Unlimited at The Fly Fishing Film Tour on April 5th. With over 200 people in attendance, we were able to raise a hefty sum of money that will allow us to move forward with future conservation projects.

Thank you to Lincoln Theatre in Mt. Vernon for hosting us and to The Confluence Fly Shop for putting in a great deal of work in order to make this a successful event. Other fantastic sponsors include Dogfish Boats, Sage, Redington, Dryft, Kite Paddle Surf, LFS Marine, Yeager's Sporting Goods, Joe's Garden, Big 5, Kulshan Brewery, Bobos, Yeti, The Flyfish Journal,  OPST, Raging River Sales, Rods Reels & Heels, Brandywine Kitchen, Chuckanut Brewery, Railroad Pub and Pizza, Shirlee Bird Cafe, Oskar Blues, and the Washington Council of Trout Unlimited.

Coming Up

  • Our last chapter meeting before we take a three month hiatus will be May 8th at Brandywine Kitchen. Mike LeMoine, an Upper Skagit fisheries biologist, will be presenting on North of Falcon and the decision making processes involved. Social hour starts at 6:30p. Meeting begins at 7p. Meet us in the upstairs mezzanine.

  • North Sound Women on the Fly is hosting an entomology pre-funk just before the aforementioned chapter meeting. Everyone is welcome to join us at 5:30p in the upstairs mezzanine at Brandywine Kitchen. NSWOTF's own Kendra Krantz will be leading a fun discussion about bug basics, the flies that mimic them, and knowing which flies to fish based on the conditions.

  • Spring is here and it's time to shake off the dust! Join North Sound Women on the Fly for a potluck meet & greet. This picnic-style hang out will be at Lake Padden (next to the playground, on the dog park side). Eat some good food, swap stories, practice casting, and even wet a line if you so desire. Bring a chair or blanket and a dish to share. This event is open to everyone, so feel free to bring the whole family. The more the merrier! Event page found here
Most recent haul from the Lake Padden Monofilament Station. Great to see the community using it and keeping all that trash out of the lake.

Update: Monofilament Stations

Words and Photos by Brandon Sly

Monofilament fishing line lasts up to 600 years in the environment where it can entangle wildlife, be eaten by a variety of species, and become hazardous to boaters and swimmers. Once monofilament is in the environment it can be very difficult to remove. The best way to protect our waters and wildlife from monofilament is to prevent it from being littered in the first place. Mono collection stations are a proven method to achieve this goal.

As many of you may know NSTU has installed several monofilament collection stations throughout our membership area. With the lowland lake opener upon us we have added a few more stations in Whatcom County. Be on the lookout for two new stations located at Lake Padden. One is located near the fishing dock by the outflow on the west side of the lake. The other is installed near the fishing dock on the east side of the lake. This is in addition to the station located at the fishing pier near the tennis courts. We have also added a mono collection station at the Cain Lake boat launch.

In our ongoing effort to maintain the mono collection stations throughout our membership area we are currently looking for volunteers to help clean out and monitor stations. This is a great way to get more involved with NSTU without having to commit to several volunteer days a month. Below is a complete list of the mono collection stations currently installed within our membership area. If you live near one of these stations and would like to help out or would just like some more info please contact us.

Update: Steelhead Spawner Surveys
Words and Photos By Scott Willison

Our North Sound Trout Unlimited spring steelhead spawner surveys on the middle Skagit tributaries are trucking right along.  Water conditions this year have been generally more favorable than last as far as stream height and clarity, making it much more effective to see what's been going on out there.

We've been surveying Day and Finney Creeks at least every two weeks, working around the roller coaster ebbs and flows of rain events for our best opportunities to view onchorynchus mykiss doing its thing.  We've sighted a number of new redds on Day Creek and a couple of test digs on Finney Creek, indicating there are at least a few fish around.  Water temps and weather patterns have remained on the cooler side this year, so we're hoping we're yet to see a the big spike in spawning activity we'd usually be observing by this point in the season.

We'll be continuing to survey through the end of May and potentially early June.  If you're interested in participating in the surveys this year and have not already reached out to me, drop me an email at scott@theconfluenceflyshop.com and we'll get you added to the survey roster.  We do both weekday and weekend surveys depending on water conditions and survey leader schedules so we'll have several opportunities for you to join in the fun.
