A special thanks to Barrett Knox for preaching a fantastic sermon last week from John 4. This week, we turn the page to understand Jesus’ relationship with The Father.
John 5 speaks about the relationship between Jesus and God. Every parent knows the troubling moment of watching their child imitate some of their worst habits. You look and think, “Where on earth did they learn that?…oops!” It might be in speech, behavior, or habit … but every parent experiences those moments.
Jesus makes clear that he imitates his Father. What the Father does, Jesus does.
In exploring this theme for Sunday’s message, it dawned on me the Bible has a great deal for us to learn about the impact of parental examples when it comes to the good, bad, and the ugly. In the case of Jesus, imitation of His Father only resulted in good things (God is good through and through). However, in our own lives, imitation of our parents can lead to a wide range of results (good, bad, and yes, ugly).
Discipleship is about imitation. Disciples were learning followers and practiced imitation of their rabbi. They imitated actions, speech, interactions, and reactions. Because of this, choosing the rabbi to follow literally changed their life.
Who is your rabbi? Who do you imitate? What is the result?
These are questions we should all ask ourselves as we seek to understand why we are the way we are and why we do what we do.
See you Sunday!
