.Now that we (and you if you were there) have come down from our high that was Onyx’s 1st Annual Vision Board Party, we want to express a sincere THANK YOU to our Onyx Therapy Group community for showing up and showing out with us. 10 years ago, Dr. Plummer and her best friend and business partner Ayana had a vision for a mental health company rooted in the Black & Brown communities. As their vision manifested over the past 10 years, Dr. Plummer wanted to recreate a vision and manifestation process with our community and our vision board event was born!


February welcomes in Black History Month, and it strikes two different places in our minds and hearts, but the root of it all is love. Black History Month, as we know, is all year round in our eyes, (put your fists and lighters up) but this is the month America has decided to highlight us in all of our beautiful glory as Black and Brown people. The celebration of love and life for Black people will never cease and as much as there is turmoil living in 2023, there is joy as well.

As we know, most representations of African Americans throughout American history have downplayed our bonds of affection with the ones we love, and have purposefully avoided showing how we have an immense amount of value that is ingrained in our being. But here at Onyx, we WILL showcase the love for our people and Black love - PERIOD.

In the spirit of love and kindness, we put together a list of our favorite Black places, music and good reads for you to share with the ones you love this month and beyond.

Healing is not always the most beautiful of journeys…but it is imperative. We don't always know when someone is healing just as much as someone else doesn't know WE are healing, which makes it important to give the space to yourself and others to act upon different behaviors during this time.

January 17th: The Hilltop | Colorado Springs shooter charged with 305 criminal charges, shooting impacts Howard’s LGBTQ community

Dr. Plummer shares her opinion with The Hilltop as a Howard alumni on the rise of violence against LGBTQ+ communities based off of the recent Colorado shooting at an LGBTQ+ nightclub and how these events will affect LGBTQ+ Howard college students who are navigating their own self-identity and expression during this time.

January 18th: Wes Moore Governor Inauguration

Dr. Plummer had the pleasure of attending the historical inauguration of the FIRST Black Governor of Maryland - Wes Moore. She chose to support him throughout his campaign and it made her very proud to be a part of the work that he will do in our community.

January 18th: From Cali to Maryland Blog from Aisha Spencer

We'd like to introduce our newest blog contributor, Aisha Spencer, to the Onyx team! In her first blog she reflects on one of the hardest things she's had to make a decision about: making a cross country move from California to Maryland for the benefit of her family.

January 19th: Embodying the power of our roots

Participants of this UW Stout discussion learned practical and actionable steps to take as individuals and as leaders while confronting and processing microaggressions, burnout, and mental health concerns while also being real about risks and possible consequences.

January 23rd: Mommy issues are a thing - By Dr. Plummer

In this raw and real take on #traumabonding, Dr. Plummer shares her perspective on forgiveness when it comes to relationships with family, friends, and even yourself.

January 23rd: Glamour Magazine | Writing Therapy may be the key to Mental Health in 2023

Dr. Plummer discusses the health benefits of writing therapy and how it could be a helpful tool for people who are looking to confront difficult feelings head on in a safe and vulnerable environment.

Embodying the Power of Our Roots: Microaggressions, Burnout, Boundaries, and Ancestral Connections

A four-part series on learning to speak up to micro-aggressions, address burnout, and set clear boundaries by harnessing ancestral and community connections.

February 18th : AMI/USA 2023 Montessori Conference

Dr. Plummer will discuss how adversity and trauma during childhood can impact brain development tapping into the brain’s biology to support healing and well-being, the power of relationships and relational health as a buffer against stressful family situations sustaining mental health for caregivers and their children.

February 23rd: Northwest Regional Equity Conference

Dr. Plummer leads a panel at the NW Regional Equity Conference at Clark College. This conference aims to improve equitable, sustainable experiences and outcomes for systemically marginalized and underrepresented populations through inclusive and anti-racist strategies.

This conference is geared toward educators, administrators, non-profit, governmental, and other professionals and individuals across the region who would like to broaden their social justice knowledge or remove institutional barriers for systemically underrepresented populations.

February 25th : Cecily’s Advocacy Conference

Dr Plummer will join a panel discussion on how to “Decode The Kid Code.” The panel will discuss how to help parents read the signs children are trying to send, and will offer strategies from various developmental levels, professional perspectives, and age groups.
