Onyx Monthly Newsletter July 2021
Although it feels like June has come and gone, as we look back over the last 30 days all we can see is the love, Pride, and commitment we made as a group to celebrate everything that comes in June.
It was an amazing month filled with beautiful and epic moments, as Onyx continues to reach new heights and new people with their work. We celebrated life, love and individuality with our LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters for Pride 2021, and celebrated our Black fathers and father figures, who have guided us and helped shape who we are. Juneteenth was the perfect way for us to catapult our spirits in the right direction for the summer, and to celebrate those that came before us, but also reminding us that there is still work to be done in order for Black and Brown people to truly be “free.”
As the temperature heats up, and we get ready to go back outside, we should remember to keep in mind that EVERY body is a beach body. As July presents the return to bikini season and National Bikini Day, we should embrace our bodies the way they are and practice self-love. Check out these Black-owned bathing suit companies to purchase this summer’s new beach look!
We strive to embody the quote “Loving yourself is the greatest revolution,” and as we come off a month of showing love to ourselves and others, we promise to continue to do so as we move forward through the year!
Still at the forefront of the mental health conversations within media and the community, the Onyx team continues to bestow upon the public their extensive knowledge of mental health as it pertains to ideals around perfectionism, getting our youth ready for college, and how to set boundaries for yourself during the dating phase.
Take a look at some of the ways we thrived in May and be sure to follow us at @OnyxTherapyGroup for upcoming events.
June 2nd : My Gay Playlist with Dr. Plummer and Liv Lombardi
Kicking off Pride, Dr. Plummer joins the My Gay Playlist podcast hosted by Liv Lombardi, exploring the lives of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies, the different experiences each has had with coming out to friends and family, and how faith, spiritually, and owning our identities has allowed us to find joy.
Featured tracks include songs by India.Arie, Erykah Badu, Ibeyi, Daley and more.
June 9th: High on Feminism
A podcast dedicated to highlighting women in business, Dr. Plummer sits down with HOF host Jess Poulin, to talk Onyx’s start, the intersections of cannabis/cbd and mental health, ways Onyx helps to find the right therapist, and how all therapists should have a therapist.
June 19th: Onyx celebrates Juneteenth!
On June 19th, Local WDVM helped us celebrate Black sisterhood and the ever-growing team at Onyx, with an epic photo shoot to commemorate Juneteenth. Hosted at founder Dr. Plummer’s her home in Maryland, over 30 of Onyx’s mental health professionals gathered from the DMV and Pittsburgh area, and it was a beautiful sight to see. We value the work that each and every one of our team members are doing in their respective communities and we want them to know that they are valued as a member of the Onyx team.
Our photographer, Ornelle Chimi, always holds space for us and captures our best moments.
Dr. Plummer said it perfectly, “We are a professional family. I get to be the guide, while they serve as the anchor. Our ancestors illuminate the path and we follow the light, knowing that Onyx therapy Group is part of the purpose. We are purpose driven.”
June 22nd: Spillin’ the Tea w/ Dr. P featuring Bailey Vogt
For the new episode of Spillin’ the Tea, Dr. Plummer sits down with DC-based journalist Bailey Vogt for a special Pride edition. Talking all things LGBTQ+, including their respective coming out experiences, building your own families, and fashion changes post-coming out, the two shed light on the difficulties their community faces on their path to be themselves. Proving that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel though, Dr. P and Bailey celebrate in all that is Pride 2021.
On June 23rd, Dr. Plummer participated in a webinar for Mental Health America’s Pride series. Breaking down the experience of coming out, associated feelings, and possible trauma and attachment disorders that may come from it, Dr. Plummer spoke to a group of over 400 students, educators, and LGBTQ+ people.
