| A note from our chair

Welcome to September's AHSN Network News. In this edition you can read my interview for the autumn issue of Pf Magazine, which was a great opportunity to highlight the role of innovation in the NHS coronavirus (COVID-19) recovery. The AHSN Network is committed to supporting the health and social care sector with this challenge with the adoption and spread of world-class research and innovation.

I'm also proud to announce that the AHSN Network has been nominated for a HSJ Award, for our national COVID Oximetry @home and virtual wards initiative. The awards recognise outstanding dedication to improving healthcare and it's fantastic to be nominated.

Professor Gary Ford, Chair of the AHSN Network and Chief Executive of Oxford AHSN

| AHSNs shortlisted for prestigious HSJ Awards

The AHSN Network is delighted that six AHSN supported initiatives have been nominated for a prestigious HSJ Award, including the AHSN Network in the patient safety category.

The Network nomination is for the significant support all Patient Safety Collaboratives and AHSNs provided for the COVID Oximetry @home and virtual wards initiative, delivered in partnership with NHS England and NHS Improvement, NHS Digital and NHSX. The project used remote self-monitoring as an effective way of protecting both patients and the healthcare service, by supporting people at most risk to receive care safely at home.

Meet Nick de Pennington, CEO and founder of Ufonia, an autonomous telemedicine platform supported by Oxford AHSN. Nick discusses how his innovation supports clinicians to avoid burnout and is assisting the NHS to manage the backlog built up by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, as well as his background as a neurosurgeon and his tips for budding innovators.

What bits of advice would you give budding innovators?

‘Just do it’ has been key for me. I went very deep in my clinical work and I think people think that’s very brave to stop. But I think it’s the opposite – I completed all my training and have all the certificates to hang on the wall. In fact, I think it’s braver to take the leap earlier because there’s so much uncertainty. If you feel the itch for where there’s a problem, then you should seize the opportunity because if not now, when?
