Dear Wendy,

We write to share the news of a new Agrarian Commons! The Central Virginia Agrarian Commons supports BIPOC control of land for building resilient regional food systems. The founding board members of this Commons share a goal of repairing the harms of Black land loss that have impacted Black farmers in Richmond and the surrounding region.

This Agrarian Commons

  • is governed by a majority-Black board.

  • centers the interdependence of rural and urban communities.

  • models land justice through a gift of generationally white-held land.

Learn more about the vision and the people behind the Central Virginia Agrarian Commons.

Meet Central Virginia Agrarian Commons board member and urban farmer Duron Chavis. He talks about his passion for food justice, the need for Black land ownership, and using privilege to reach for justice.

Agrarian Commons News

The West Virginia Agrarian Commons has returned equity to the Fayetteville community.

In October, after just ten months of fundraising, we reached our goal of raising $258,000 for the West Virginia Agrarian Commons.

The Fayetteville community has long experienced the extraction of natural resources and human labor and is now experiencing corporate extraction tied to recreation and tourism. The West Virginia Agrarian Commons farmland fundraiser returned $2 for every $1 raised locally.

The West Virginia Agrarian Commons will now move forward to acquire the 82-acre farm in Fayetteville!
