Dear readers:

2020 brings the best news for CAPAZ! The second phase of the institute will be developed from now until 2023. The project coordinated with CEDPAL and financed by the German Federal Foreign Office is underway and will involve joint activities in Germany and Colombia. CAPAZ has also received additional funds to support the work of the Colombian Commission for the Clarification of Truth in Germany. NETCAPAZ, the network of peace researchers promoted by our Institute will be more dynamic in Germany in 2020, and CAPAZ will launch its presence in social networks with new videos and hold two key events in the Eje Cafetero: the international congress and the board meeting. CAPAZ International congress in 2020
 
CAPAZ and Universidad de Caldas will organise the international congress in Manizales, to be held on March 26 and 27, 2020. The event will bring together researchers from the German and Colombian CAPAZ universities, other Colombian universities and social organisations.
New CAPAZ video-columns in 2020
 
In 2019, the CAPAZ Institute produced a series of videos about its mission and lines of research:
institutional teaser / transitional justice with testimonials by Kai Ambos, Patricia Linares, Francisco de Roux and Luz Marina Monzón / territorial peace in Caquetá / autobiographical and historical memory in Medellín In 2020, we will present five new video-columns with the expert voices of German and Colombian researchers, who will talk about environmental democracy, historical memory, the Colombian model of transitional justice, political education and social inequalities.
Platforms for the CALAS dialogue co-organised by CAPAZ
 
CAPAZ is co-organising an international seminar to address forced disappearance as a transnational issue in Latin America. The event will take place on February 26-27, 2020 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
CAPAZ will also be co-organising a CALAS platform for dialogue on "Memory and Inequalities" in the same city in June 2020. More information

CAPAZ: Phase II begins in 2020
 
In recognition of CAPAZ as a network of German-Colombian academic cooperation for peacebuilding, and following approval by the German Federal Foreign Office and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), phase II of CAPAZ has been given the go-ahead to run until 2023.
Board meeting 2020
 
The annual meeting of the CAPAZ Institute's founding and associate members will be held at the end of March 2020,  in Manizales, Colombia.
CAPAZ-supported projects in 2019
 
Seven research projects will receive support from the CAPAZ Institute for the 2019-2020 period. We received one hundred proposals, of which 42 met the requirements, and we finally presented the seven projects selected in 2019.
CAPAZ and CEDPAL coordinated project underway
 
With resources from the German Federal Foreign Office, the CAPAZ Institute and CEDPAL are advancing a project that supports the processes of justice and truth in Colombia based within academia. In 2019, workshops were held with officials from the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), the Commission for the Clarification of the Truth (CEV), and several researchers. In 2020, the project will continue to be developed in Colombia and Germany.

Researchers Luis Carlos Sánchez and Luis Miguel Buitrago specialising in democracy and armed conflict have been working together with the CEV's Knowledge Directorate since November 2019 to develop the CAPAZ and CEDPAL coordinated project. Click here

Welcoming the new DAAD Director in Colombia
 
We welcome the new director of the regional (DAAD) office in Bogotá, Dr. Martina Schulze to whom we wish Dr. Schulze success in her work. The DAAD is funding the CAPAZ Institute with resources from the German Federal Foreign Office.

Second CAPAZ young researchers congress
 
The congress, co-organised by CAPAZ and the Universidad de Antioquia, was held in Medellin in November 2019 with the participation of master's and doctoral students, and researchers from Colombia and other countries. Students Ginna and Tatiana, and professor Gabriel Ruiz shared their experiences at the congress, in videos produced by the University:

CAPAZ initiated dialogue on political education for citizens
 
In September 2019, the forum organised by CAPAZ and the Nicanor Restrepo Santamaría Think Tank on citizen political education initiated the academic and inter-institutional exchange on the subject between Colombia and Germany. Special guests included the President of the Federal Centre for Political Education in Germany (bpb), Thomas Krüger, Prof. Dr. Bernd Overwien and representatives of various social sectors.

CAPAZ participated in the Colombian Geography Congress
 
CAPAZ took part in the XXIII Colombian Geography Congress, the discipline's most important academic meeting in the country in October 2019 in Bogotá. CAPAZ was also part of GeoRaizAL, preparatory workshops for the congress.

Doctoral Seminar at Pontifica Universidad Javeriana
 
During three sessions held in October 2019, experts from various universities discussed the spaces and mechanisms for the transmission and teaching of truth commissions, from a transnational comparative perspective. Click here for more information

 
Inequalities and peacebuilding: Barranquilla seminar programme
 

CAPAZ associate member, Universidad del Norte hosted the seminar on Inequalities and Peacebuilding in Colombia in October 2019, in which participants analysed the events of the three years following the signing of the peace accords. Click here for more information
Popayan hosted a seminar on illegal economies
 
The seminar took place in December 2019 at the Banco de la República headquarters in Popayán, southern Colombia. This was the last event of the CAPAZ Spotlight on Peace cycle in 2019. It was co-organised by the Universidad del Cauca, a CAPAZ associate member. Click here for more information

CAPAZ supports Colombian delegation to visit Germany

A Colombian delegation of universities, and media and social organisations went on an academic trip to Germany in January 2020 to learn about political citizenship education in the country. CAPAZ Policy Brief

Published in November 2019, the CAPAZ Policy Brief 5-2019 makes recommendations on public policies for more effective interaction between the various existing sources of knowledge on peacebuilding (authors: Alejandro Balanzó, Carlos Mauricio Nupia and Juan Pablo Centeno). CAPAZ participated in the publication of a tribute to Alfredo Molano
 
"El hombre que supo escuchar" (The man who knew how to listen) was the name given to the CAPAZ-sponsored special issue of Arcadia magazine, published in homage to Alfredo Molano Bravo (1944-2019), Colombian historian, sociologist and journalist. Click here for more information

CAPAZ Academic Director, Prof. Dr. Stefan Peters and CAPAZ Communications Assistant, Claudia Maya, MA, published an article in the Science and Peace magazine (W&F: Wissenschaft und Frieden, Heft 4-2019) about the photographic work of the Colombian Jesús Abad Colorado and his view of the Colombian conflict over 30 years. Networking CAPAZ
NETCAPAZ platform has 200 members
 
NETCAPAZ, a platform specialised in conflict and peace issues, reached 200 registered members in 2019. This year, it will be more widely disseminated among researchers in Germany and have a greater diversity of research content. The platform is consolidated as a key tool for academic and research cooperation between Germany and Colombia. Click here for more information

 
Event held in Ibagué with UN Colombia and universities
 
CAPAZ and the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia, in cooperation with the universities of Ibagué and Tolima, joined forces for the first time in an event on reincorporation, territorial peace and reconciliation in September 2019. Click here for more information
CAPAZ Academic Director participated in CALAS events
 
CAPAZ Academic Director, Prof. Dr. Stefan Peters participated in the CALAS conference on social inequalities held in October 2019 in Quito. A month earlier, CALAS invited Prof. Dr. Stefan Peters to San José, Costa Rica where he took part in the round table on conflicts and peace processes in Central America and their Latin American implications. CAPAZ-supported Mercado Clandestino No. 22 in Bogotá
 
The Mercado Clandestino of useful knowledge and non-knowledge No. 22 was an artistic project organised by Mapa Teatro in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut and Universidad Central, and supported by CAPAZ. It was held for the first time in Bogotá in November 2019. Click here for more information

A group of students from Germany and Colombia took part in an academic excursion through Colombia and supported the work of CAPAZ until October 2019. They shared their experiences in the text: "The peace process in Colombia and the challenges of sustainable development" (in German).
CAPAZ Universities' binational master's students' visit
 
Eleven students from Germany and Colombia visited the CAPAZ seat in September 2019. The students are studying for their Master's degree in conflict, memory and peace at the Katholische Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt and Universidad del Rosario. Click here for more information
