DECEMBER 12, 2021: THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Hymn Sing:
UMH #220 Angels from the realms of Glory
1 Angels from the realms of glory,
wing your flight o'er all the earth;
ye who sang creation's story
now proclaim Messiah's birth:
Come and worship, come and worship,
worship Christ, the newborn king.

2 Shepherds, in the field abiding,
watching o'er your flocks by night,
God with us is now residing;
yonder shines the infant light:
Come and worship, come and worship,
worship Christ, the newborn king.

3 Sages, leave your contemplations,
brighter visions beam afar;
seek the great Desire of nations;
ye have seen his natal star:
Come and worship, come and worship,
worship Christ, the newborn king.

UMH #228 He is Born
1 Thru long ages of the past,
prophets have foretold his coming;
thru long ages of the past,
now the time has come at last!
He is born, the holy Child,
play the oboe and bagpipes merrily!
He is born, the holy Child,
sing we all of the Savior mild.

2 O how lovely, O how pure
is this perfect child of heaven;
O how lovely, O how pure
gracious gift to humankind!
He is born, the holy Child,
play the oboe and bagpipes merrily!
He is born, the holy Child,
sing we all of the Savior mild.

3 Jesus, Lord of all the world,
coming as a child among us,
Jesus, Lord of all the world,
grant to us thy heavenly peace.
He is born, the holy Child,
play the oboe and bagpipes merrily!
He is born, the holy Child,
sing we all of the Savior mild.

UMH #237 Sing We Now of Christmas
1 Sing we now of Christmas,
Noel, sing we here!
Hear our grateful praises
to the babe so dear.
Sing we Noel, the King is born, Noel!
Sing we now of Christmas, sing we now Noel!

2 Angels called to shepherds,
"Leave your flocks at rest,
journey forth to Bethlehem,
find the lambkin blest."
Sing we Noel, the King is born, Noel!
Sing we now of Christmas, sing we now Noel!

3 In Bethlehem they found him;
Joseph and Mary mild,
seated by the manger,
watching the holy child.
Sing we Noel, the King is born, Noel!
Sing we now of Christmas, sing we now Noel!

4 From the eastern country
came the kings afar,
bearing gifts to Bethlehem
guided by a star.
Sing we Noel, the King is born, Noel!
Sing we now of Christmas, sing we now Noel!

5 Gold and myrrh they took there,
gifts of greatest price;
there was ne'er a place on earth
so like paradise.
Sing we Noel, the King is born, Noel!
Sing we now of Christmas, sing we now Noel!

Greeting and Welcome
Let us take a moment to prepare our minds and hearts to worship God.

Centering Words (Phil 4:4 NRSV)
“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.”

Opening Prayer (Zeph 3, Isa 12)
God of our salvation, you bring victory to the righteous
and comfort to the outcast.
As we come before you this day,
lighten our hearts with laughter
and loosen our tongues to sing your praise.
For you alone are the source of our hope;
you alone are the fountain of our joy.
Be with us now and always. Amen.

Lighting the Advent Candle
Reader 1: Today we light three candles- the first Candle is called HOPE and it is a reminder that God's promises are true.
Reader 2: The second Candle is called PEACE, God's gentle loving peace for our lives.
Reader 3: The third Candle is called JOY, because of God's absolute presence in our lives.
Reader 4: Come, all is ready. Let the light of this these candles, called HOPE, PEACE, and JOY, bring brightness to your spirits.
[The first , second and third Advent Candles are lighted]

HYMN – UMH #89 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee
1 Joyful, joyful, we adore You,
God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flow'rs before You,
Op'ning to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;
Drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness,
Fill us with the light of day!

2 All Your works with joy surround You,
Earth and heav'n reflect Your rays,
Stars and angels sing around You,
Center of unbroken praise;
Field and forest, vale and mountain,
Flow'ry meadow, flashing sea,
Chanting bird and flowing fountain
Praising You eternally!

3 Always giving and forgiving,
Ever blessing, ever blest,
Well-spring of the joy of living,
Ocean-depth of happy rest!
Loving Father, Christ our Brother,
Let Your light upon us shine;
Teach us how to love each other,
Lift us to the joy divine.

4 Mortals, join the mighty chorus,
Which the morning stars began;
God's own love is reigning o’er us,
Joining people hand in hand.
Ever singing, march we onward,
Victors in the midst of strife;
Joyful music leads us sunward
In the triumph song of life.

Joy and Concerns

Pastoral Prayer and Lord’s Prayer

Scripture Reading (I): Isaiah 12:2-6
2 Surely God is my salvation;
    I will trust and not be afraid.
The LORD, the LORD himself, is my strength and my defense[a];
    he has become my salvation.”
3 With joy you will draw water
    from the wells of salvation.
4 In that day you will say: “Give praise to the LORD,
proclaim his name; make known among the nations
 what he has done and proclaim that his name is exalted.
5 Sing to the LORD, for he has done glorious things;
    let this be known to all the world.
6 Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion,
    for great is the Holy One of Israel among you.”

Prayer of Yearning (Zeph 3, Isa 12, Phil 4)
Source of compassion and grace,
we yearn to embody the joy of your salvation,
but we are easily distracted
by the demands of the season;
we long to taste the wellspring of your mercy,
but we are caught up in the frenzy of the holidays.
Be our quiet center,
that we may find your joy deep within.
Be our secret heart,
that we may live lives of love
wherever we go.
In your holy name, we pray. Amen.

Words of Assurance (Zeph 3, Luke 3)
The one who loves us with a fierce tenderness
takes away our guilt and leads us in the ways of life.
The one who guides us with justice and mercy
restores our fortunes and leads us home.

HYMN – UMH #445 Happy the Home
1. Happy the home when God is there,
And love fills every breast;
When one their wish, and one their prayer,
And one their heav’nly rest.

2. Happy the home where Jesus’ name
Is sweet to every ear;
Where children early speak His fame,
And parents hold Him dear.

3. Happy the home where prayer is heard,
And praise is wont to rise;
Where parents love the sacred Word
And all its wisdom prize.

4. Lord, let us in our homes agree
This blessed peace to gain;
Unite our hearts in love to Thee,
And love to all will reign.

Offering Prayer
Generous God, the bounty of your love
overflows into every aspect of our lives.
May the gifts we bring before you this day
be a sign of our commitment to share our love
with those in need.
May the offerings we place upon your Lord’s table
symbolize our trust in your power to heal the world
through the works of our hands
and the ministries of your church.
In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.

Doxology (UMH# 95)

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen

Scripture Reading (II): Philippians 4:4-7
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

HYMN – UMH #234 O Come All Ye Faithful
1. O come, all ye faithful,
joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem.
Come and behold him,
born the King of angels;
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
Christ the Lord.

2. True God of true God, Light from Light eternal,
lo, he shuns not the Virgin's womb;
Son of the Father, begotten, not created;
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
Christ the Lord.

3. Sing, choirs of angels,
sing in exultation;
O sing, all ye citizens of heaven above!
Glory to God, all glory in the highest;
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
Christ the Lord.

4. See how the shepherds, summoned to his cradle,
leaving their flocks, draw nigh to gaze;
we too will thither bend our joyful footsteps;
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
Christ the Lord.

5. Child, for us sinners poor and in the manger,
we would embrace thee with love and awe.
Who would not love thee, loving us so dearly?
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
Christ the Lord.

6. Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning,
Jesus, to thee be all glory given.
Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing:
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
Christ the Lord.

Benediction (Phil 4)
Go with the joy of the Lord on your lips.
Go with the peace of Christ in your hearts.
Go with the strength of the Holy Spirit
in every step you take.
Go with God.
