For in-person worship, find us inside the church
this morning at 10:30.
Greeting and Welcome
Let us take a moment to prepare our minds and hearts to worship God.

Hymn Sing:
UMH #203 – Hail to the Lord’s Anointed
1. Hail to the Lord's Anointed,
great David's greater Son!
Hail in the time appointed,
his reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression,
to set the captive free;
to take away transgression,
and rule in equity.
2. He comes with succor speedy
to those who suffer wrong;
to help the poor and needy,
and bid the weak be strong;
to give them songs for sighing,
their darkness turn to light,
whose souls, condemned and dying,
are precious in his sight.
3. He shall come down like showers
upon the fruitful earth;
love, joy, and hope, like flowers,
spring in his path to birth.
Before him on the mountains,
shall peace, the herald, go,
and righteousness, in fountains,
from hill to valley flow.
4. To him shall prayer unceasing
and daily vows ascend;
his kingdom still increasing,
a kingdom without end.
The tide of time shall never
his covenant remove;
his name shall stand forever;
that name to us is love.
UMH #204 – Emmanuel, Emmanuel
Emmanuel, Emmanuel, his name is called Emmanuel.
God with us, revealed in us, his name is called Emmanuel.
Watchman Tell Us
1 Watchman, tell us of the night,
what its signs of promise are.
Traveler, what a wondrous sight:
see that glory-beaming star.
Watchman, does its beauteous ray
news of joy or hope foretell?
Traveler, yes; it brings the day,
promised day of Israel.
2 Watchman, tell us of the night;
higher yet that star ascends.
Traveler, blessedness and light,
peace and truth its course portends.
Watchman, will its beams alone
gild the spot that gave them birth?
Traveler, ages are its own;
see, it bursts o’er all the earth.
3 Watchman, tell us of the night,
for the morning seems to dawn.
Traveler, shadows take their flight;
doubt and terror are withdrawn.
Watchman, you may go your way;
hasten to your quiet home.
Traveler, we rejoice today,
for Emmanuel has come!
 Centering Words (Luke 1)
By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us—giving light to those who sit in darkness, comforting those who dwell in the shadow of death, and guiding our feet in the way of peace.

Opening Prayer (Mal 3, Luke 3)
Redeeming Keeper of Promises,
your messengers remind us
that you are the source of peace, justice, mercy,
and loving kindness.
As we prepare for your coming in your Son Jesus,
help us shine as the radiant body of Christ,
that we may be light for a gloomy, broken world.

Lighting the Advent Candle

Reader 1: Today we light two candles- the first Candle is called HOPE and it is a reminder that God's promises are true.
Reader 2: The second Candle is called PEACE, God's gentle loving peace for our lives.
Reader 3: We seek God's peace in this time of stress.
Reader 4: Come, all is ready. Let the light of this these candles, called HOPE and PEACE, bring brightness to your spirits.
[The first and second Advent Candles are lighted]
HYMN – UMH #626 Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent
1 Let all mortal flesh keep silence,
and with fear and trembling stand.
Ponder nothing earthly minded,
for with blessing in his hand
Christ our God to earth descending
comes, our homage to demand.
2 King of kings, yet born of Mary,
as of old on earth he stood,
Lord of heaven now incarnate
in the body and the blood,
he will give to all the faithful
his own self for heavenly food.
3 Rank on rank the host of heaven
streams before him on the way,
as the Light of light descending
from the realms of endless day
comes, that powers of hell may vanish,
as the shadows pass away.
4 At his feet the six-winged seraph,
cherubim with sleepless eye,
veil their faces to the Presence,
as with ceaseless voice they cry,
“Alleluia! Alleluia!
Alleluia, Lord Most High!”
Joy and Concerns
Pastoral Prayer
Scripture Reading (I): Isaiah 12:2-6
Surely God is my salvation;
    I will trust and not be afraid.
The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense;
    he has become my salvation.”
With joy you will draw water
    from the wells of salvation.
In that day you will say:
“Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;
    make known among the nations what he has done,
    and proclaim that his name is exalted.
Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things;
    let this be known to all the world.
Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion,
    for great is the Holy One of Israel among you.”
HYMN – UMH #202 People Look East
  1. People, look east. The time is near of the crowning of the year.
Make your house fair as you are able,
trim the hearth and set the table.
People look east: Love, the Guest, is on the way.
  1. Furrows, be glad. Though earth is bare, one more seed is planted there. Give up your strength, the seed to nourish,
That in course the flower may flourish.
People look east: Love the Rose, is on the way.
  1. Stars, keep the watch. When night is dim, one more light the bowl shall brim, shining beyond the frosty weather,
Bright as sun and moon together.
People look east: Love the Star, is on the way.
  1. Angels announce with shouts of mirth him who brings new life
to earth. Set every peak and valley humming with the word, the Lord is coming.
People look east: Love, the Lord, is on the way.
Offering Prayer (Luke 1)
Immanuel, God with us, in gratitude for the mercy
you showed our ancestors in faith,
and in thanksgiving for your holy covenant
with all your people,
we offer you these gifts and offerings.
Doxology (UMH# 95)
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen
Scripture Reading (II): Luke 3:1-6
 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.
Every valley shall be filled in,
    every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
    the rough ways smooth.
And all people will see God’s salvation.’”
Response Prayer
Holy Communion
Affirmation of Faith (UMH 881)
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;*
the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic** church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

HYMN – TFWS #2030 Surely It is God Who Saves Me
Surely it is God who saves me;
I will trust in him and not be afraid.
For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense,
and he will be my Savior.
As we await the coming of the Promised One,
may your love and knowledge
and insight overflow,
that you may live in peace and harmony
with all beings for the glory and praise of God.
