DECEMBER 19, 2021: FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT

HYMN SING
UMH #240 Hark the Herald Angels Sing
1 Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the newborn King:
peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!"
Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
join the triumph of the skies;
with the angelic hosts proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem!"
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the newborn King"
2 Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord,
late in time behold him come,
offspring of the Virgin's womb:
veiled in flesh the Godhead see;
hail the incarnate Deity,
pleased with us in flesh to dwell,
Jesus, our Immanuel.
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the newborn King"

3 Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
risen with healing in his wings.
Mild he lays his glory by,
born that we no more may die,
born to raise us from the earth,
born to give us second birth.
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the newborn King"

UMH #242 – Love came down at Christmas
1 Love came down at Christmas,
Love all lovely, Love divine;
Love was born at Christmas,
star and angels gave the sign.

2 Worship we the Godhead,
Love incarnate, Love divine;
worship we our Jesus:
but wherewith for sacred sign?

3 Love shall be our token,
love be yours and love be mine,
love to God and all men,
love for plea and gift and sign.

UMH # 245 The First Noel
1 The first Noel the angel did say
was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
in fields where they lay keeping their sheep,
on a cold winter's night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
born is the King of Israel.

2 They looked up and saw a star
shining in the east, beyond them far;
and to the earth it gave great light,
and so it continued both day and night.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
born is the King of Israel.

3 And by the light of that same star
three Wise Men came from country far;
to seek for a king was their intent,
and to follow the star wherever it went.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
born is the King of Israel.

4 This star drew nigh to the northwest,
o'er Bethlehem it took its rest;
and there it did both stop and stay,
right over the place where Jesus lay.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
born is the King of Israel.

5 Then entered in those Wise Men three,
full reverently upon the knee,
and offered there, in his presence,
their gold and myrrh and frankincense.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
born is the King of Israel.

Greeting and Welcome
Let us take a moment to prepare our minds and hearts to worship God.
Centering Words (Luke 1)
The very air we breathe is filled with joyous expectation. The one who has done great things for us is with us now. Glory to God in the highest!

Opening Prayer (Luke 1)

God of joyous expectation, come to us this day.
May the miracles in our lives fill us with wonder.
May an encounter with your goodness and grace
cause our hearts to leap within us.
Receive us into the arms of your mercy,
that we may feel you near us
and rest secure in your many blessings. Amen.

Lighting the Advent Candle

Reader 1: Today we light four candles- the first Candle is called HOPE and it is a reminder that God's promises are true.
Reader 2: The second Candle is called PEACE, God's gentle loving peace for our lives.
Reader 3: The third Candle is called JOY, because of God's absolute presence in our lives.
Reader 4: The fourth Candle is called LOVE, because of God's great love for us.
All Readers: Come, all is ready. Let the light of this these candles, called HOPE, PEACE, JOY, and LOVE, bring brightness to your spirits.
[The first , second, third, and fourth Advent Candles are lighted]

HYMN – UMH #196 Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus
1. Come, thou long expected Jesus,
born to set thy people free;
from our fears and sins release us,
let us find our rest in thee.
Israel's strength and consolation,
hope of all the earth thou art;
dear desire of every nation,
joy of every longing heart.

2. Born thy people to deliver,
born a child and yet a King,
born to reign in us forever,
now thy gracious kingdom bring.
By thine own eternal spirit
rule in all our hearts alone;
by thine all sufficient merit,
raise us to thy glorious throne.
Joy and Concerns

Pastoral Prayer and Lord’s Prayer

Scripture Reading (I): Micah 5:2-5a

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
    though you are small among the clans of Judah,
out of you will come for me
    one who will be ruler over Israel,
whose origins are from of old,
    from ancient times.”
Therefore Israel will be abandoned
    until the time when she who is in labor bears a son,
and the rest of his brothers return
    to join the Israelites.
He will stand and shepherd his flock
    in the strength of the Lord,
    in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God.
And they will live securely, for then his greatness
    will reach to the ends of the earth.
And he will be our peace
    when the Assyrians invade our land
    and march through our fortresses.

Prayer of Yearning (Luke 1)

It is hard to wait patiently, O God,
for the gift of your promised salvation.
We long to nurture the joyous expectation
that Mary and Elizabeth discovered in their greeting,
but we have grown accustomed
to living with disappointment.
We yearn to feel our hearts leap within us
as your Spirit stirs our slumbering souls,
but we have allowed ourselves
to find solace in lesser things.
Fill us with your grace,
that we may give birth to hope and joy,
and that we may abide in your peace and love.
In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.

Words of Assurance (Luke 1)

Do not let your hearts be troubled.
God will not fail to lift you out of complacency
and fill your hearts to overflowing.
Rise in joy and hope,
for God’s promises are sure,
and Christ’s salvation is at hand.

Offering Prayer (Luke 1)

Glorious God, source of every good gift,
bless our tithes and offerings this day.
May they lift up the lowly,
fill the hungry with good things,
and bring strength and mercy
to those in need.
In your holy name, we pray. Amen.

Doxology (UMH# 95)
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen

Scripture Reading (II): Luke 1:39-45
39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

Anthem

Sermon

Response Prayer

Affirmation of Faith (UMH 882)

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic** church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

HYMN – UMH #246 Joy to the World
1 Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
let every heart prepare him room
and heaven and nature sing,
and heaven and nature sing,
and heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

2 Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns!
Let men their songs employ,
while fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains,
repeat the sounding joy,
repeat the sounding joy,
repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

3 No more let sins and sorrows grow
nor thorns infest the ground;
he comes to make his blessings flow
far as the curse is found,
far as the curse is found,
far as, far as the curse is found.

4 He rules the world with truth and grace
and makes the nations prove
the glories of his righteousness
and wonders of his love,
and wonders of his love,
and wonders, wonders of his love.

Benediction (Luke 1)
Go forth and bear Christ’s hope to the world.
We will carry Christ’s hope everywhere we go.
Go forth and bear the mystery of God before others.
We will shine God’s light each and every day.
Go forth and bless the world.
We will share the Spirit in all that we say
and in all that we do.
