JANUARY 2, 2022: EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

Greeting and Welcome

Let us take a moment to prepare our minds and hearts to worship God.

Centering Words (Matthew 2)

In the darkest night, a star shines. Follow this star, for it will lead to overwhelming joy.

Call to Worship (Isaiah 60)

Arise, shine! Your light has come!
Glory to God in the highest.
Darkness covers the earth,
but God’s glory shines brightly.
Lift up your eyes. Look around.
The light of God’s love shines radiantly.
Arise, shine! Your light has come!
Our hearts thrill and rejoice!

Opening Prayer (Matthew 2)

God of light and love, shine upon our lives, as we welcome the mystery of your love. Guide us toward your true gift, for our hearts long to encounter with the holy. Quiet our expectations, that we might be surprised by the unexpected. Open our eyes, that we might find you in unanticipated places. Shine your light upon us, that we might see you clearly, and recognize your face in all people. Amen.

Offering Prayer (Matthew 2)

Giver of every gift, source of all goodness and light, we open the treasure chests of our hearts before you. We offer you gifts of gold, to care for those in need. We offer you gifts of love, to serve a suspicious world. Bless our gifts and our lives, and use them to love and heal the world. Amen.

Affirmation of Faith (UMH 884)

We believe in the one God, creator and sustainer of all things, Father of Nations, the source of all goodness and beauty, all truth and love.
We believe in Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, our teacher, example, and Redeemer, the Savior of the world.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, God present with us for guidance, for comfort, and for strength.
We believe in the forgiveness of sins, in the life of love and prayer, and in grace equal to every need.
We believe in the Word of God contained in the Old and New Testaments as the sufficient rule both of faith and of practice.
We believe in the Church, those who are united in the living Lord for the purpose of worship and service.
We believe in the reign of God as the divine will realized in human society, and in the family of God, where we are all brothers and sisters.
We believe in the final triumph of righteousness, and in the life everlasting. Amen.

HYMN – UMH#251 Go Tell it on the Mountain

Benediction (Matthew 2)

As you follow the star on your journey, don’t look for the holy in places of power and prestige. Instead, pay attention to the ordinary, the quiet places. There, may you be overcome with joy, and share your gifts with creation.
