"Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!"
2 Corinthians 9:15

Of the many amazing gifts that God has given us, the ability to give thanks is a very special one. Giving thanks uplifts our hearts, reminds us we are loved, and produces hope!

Giving thanks can change our past. When difficult memories come back to us, we can change the way we look at those memories by focusing on the aspects that became a blessing in spite of the suffering. In every difficult memory, we can see God in action in our lives and find reasons to give thanks. It is amazing to realize how God's providence and care have been with us all the time!

Giving thanks can change our present. When we take the time to think of the many blessings we have, our hearts move from anxiety to hope, from anger to love, from despair to peace. At the market, the woman in front of me started complaining about the lack of paper towels and toilet paper. I looked at her cart and mine and told her ”Yes, that is very annoying but look at all the other things we are able to get!” Giving thanks helps others have a grateful heart too!

Giving thanks can change our future. When we give thanks, our hearts remember God’s love and providence toward us. We remember other times of our lives when things were difficult and God helped us through every single time. We can trust that his love for us is steadfast and his mercies are new every morning!

Even though we have no idea how the next couple of months will be, the best way to encounter an uncertain future is with hope. Giving thanks set our hearts in the right direction and encourages us to trust. Thanks be to God for the amazing, indescribable gift of thanksgiving!
