"But me? I trust you, Lord! I affirm, “You are my God.” My future is in your hands."
 Psalms 31:14-16

In July 2009 I was appointed to a small rural church in Suffolk in a small village called Chuckatuck. I went to live by myself at the parsonage of my first American church after 12 years leading Latino Ministries in Virginia.

Julie stayed in Northern Virginia to take care of my Mom who was still alive. Living by myself for the first time was a very difficult thing to do especially because there was no one around who could speak my language.

I was determined to make it work and the congregation had a great disposition and a loving heart. I didn't have a secretary, so I was required to prepare the services, create the bulletins, and preach every Sunday in English. The church didn't have a computer, so a good friend bought me a computer so I could do my work.

When that first Sunday came, I was very scared. I prayed to God "Help me love them, Lord, help me be a good Pastor for them". I began the service with my hands trembling, struggling to read the foreign words. I tried to lead the Pastoral prayer, but it was so hard to find the right words because all my prayers are always in Spanish.

Thankfully, the time for the sermon came and after I read the scripture, I knew I could do it. Preaching has always been natural for me, to interpret and share the word of God. I preached with all my heart and when I finished, they began to clap. "We got a preacher", someone said. From that day on I knew I would be loved.

With the help of that loving congregation, I was able to grow as a professional and be ready for my next appointment at Lower UMC. Here I have been able to use my gifts and improve my skills, but more than that, I have learned to trust in myself as a Pastor. I am truly grateful for all the blessings I have received in this church, especially the amazing people I have the privilege to serve.

Now I am on the verge of another transition, leaving behind a place I love and the people I consider my family, to lead another congregation. By now I know that God is already on the other side waiting for me and he will give me the courage to shine one more time!
