You may have seen reports in the media of the current unrest in certain parts of South Africa (KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng province) which was sparked when some groups within the country demanded the release of the recently imprisoned Former President Jacob Zuma. Unfortunately, an opportunistic, criminal element have used this opportunity to engage in illegal activity.
We’d like to make you aware of our view of the current position, and that these protests have been concentrated in certain areas of our country (only 2 of the 9 provinces in South Africa) with most of the country, such as the Western Cape Province largely unaffected. In the areas impacted - KwaZulu Natal and parts of Gauteng - there is an element of people who are actively participating in looting of some of the large chain stores and warehouses. Hotels, restaurants, airports, places of interest and other important landmarks as well as infrastructure, remain unaffected. Thompsons Africa staff are all safe and our offices are unaffected.
Our current view on the ground is that the unrest is coming to an end, with Government and the private sector now actively working on resurrecting the supply chain in the affected areas. We expect to see the situation return to normality within the next week.
Thompsons Africa currently has guests on the ground in Cape Town, Botswana and Victoria Falls. No itineraries to date have been affected, however should this change, a Thompsons Africa consultant will be in touch to make the necessary arrangements.
SATSA (Southern Africa Tourism Association Services) have shared these local media channels as providing up-to-date reporting on the unrest.
We are available for any queries you might have regarding bookings on the ground or future bookings which we are holding. Please contact your Thompsons Africa consultant, or call us on +27 31 275 3500.
We are deeply saddened by these events but remain positive and hopeful that within the next few days, calm will be restored as we are beginning to see in the past 24 hours.
