Weed management is essential to successfully grow vegetables in Florida using a plasticulture system. Dr. Kanissery studies the utility of different herbicide application practices. His research results suggest that applying pre-emergent or residual herbicides in tandem with a pre-mulching soil fumigation strategy is effective because the pre-emergent herbicides will typically be 'activated' by the condensation under the mulch. This method also better manages weeds on bed edges than fumigants injected through the drip irrigation due to the limited lateral movement of current fumigants. His recent study compared the use of pre-emergence herbicides under plastic to the use of plastic alone.
