"The accomplished are those who know how to learn from their mistakes, not people who never make mistakes" - Julie Rains
We grace this issue with a reflection by business writer, Julie Rains. In her thought-provoking piece, she highlights the determined, resilient approach of notable achievers like Thomas Edison ("I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work"), Richard Branson and others.
Mistakes are a part of life, but learning from them is not always straightforward and many of us struggle to bounce back, to admit our failings and to reflect on the process and reduce the risk of repeating the same mistake again.
Failure is often championed as a critical step in the path to eventual success.
Rains highlights the advantages to be gained by taking time to consider our mistakes in light of the growth we need to make, and suggests asking ourselves questions like were my goals attainable, did I make accurate assumptions, did my strategies make sense and how organised was I?
As we rapidly approach the end of another year, it’s important to put some time aside to relook at the big picture – to reset our sights, ensure that our goals are well thought out, reasonable and attainable and to be grateful whilst things are good now in light of future uncertainty. Making time for this is an investment in our future.
