Children Choirs Resume with New Cherub Choir
It was great to see so many of you this past Sunday at our Homecoming service and barbeque at St. David's. I hope everyone had a restful summer and you are all looking forward to fall and the academic the year ahead. This fall at St. David’s we have some exciting changes regarding our choirs. We are adding a new Cherub Choir, which will be for children ages 4 to 7. Our own Joel Wood will be directing this new choir. The Jubilate Choir will continue under my leadership and will now be for ages 8 through high school.
We made the decision to offer a Cherub Choir so the youngest singers can get the proper attention they need to develop their musical skills. The Jubilate Choir will now focus on the musical needs of our older, more advanced singers. This will give them the opportunity to sing more difficult material and sing more often in our Sunday services. Joel has a lot of experience teaching our youngest singers and I’ll let him give you some details on his background below.
Our choir season will begin this Thursday, Sept 12th with our 6:00 pm rehearsal followed by a pizza party for both the Cherub Choir and the Jubilate Choir. Our evening schedule will consist of separate rehearsals for both choirs before we come together for pizza around 6:35pm.
This coming Sunday, September 15th, both choirs will sing together in the 10:00 am service. Please be prompt on Sunday morning for the warm-up rehearsal at 9:40 am. I’m going to ask a huge favor this year, and this is if your children are not able to make thJOele rehearsal or the warm-up, they do not sing in the 10:00 am service.
Starting in October, we’ll return to our usual monthly first Thursday night rehearsals with pizza party afterwards. I’ve included a detailed schedule for the fall semester below. As always, parents are encouraged to socialize in the undercroft with wine and snacks during the evening rehearsals. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or suggestions for the choir. I look forward to seeing everyone in church for Homecoming!
A Message from Joel Wood, Cherub Choir Director
I'm thrilled for the opportunity to work with the 4 to 7 year old's in the newly established Cherub Choir. Most of you know me as the Parish Administrator but a bit more about me: I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Music, Magna cum Laude, from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. I was a scholarship recipient for the opera program and studied under Grammy Award Winning Tenor, John Aler. During my time at Mason I completed various education courses/internships and served as a co-director of children's choirs at St. George's Episcopal in Arlington, VA for four years. My approach to educating the youngest musicians is learning through play- pitch and rhythm matching games, basics of notes on a staff, time signature patterns, and perhaps most importantly- using our voices to praise God. As a father of a three year old, I know that it's never too early to begin learning music while having fun!
See you soon!
