Youth and Family
Announcements & Events

We are thrilled to announce new staff, events and opportunities for
Children, Youth, and Families
at Saint David's!

We are excited to introduce to you our new Youth & Family Missioner, Lizzie Polk! Lizzie begins officially in October as our Sunday School Sherpa and co-conspirator in building up and out our formation offerings for children, youth and their families.  Please join us in celebrating this next big step in putting energy and resources into this growing and vital part of our parish family.

This Thursday (9/12) St D's Children's Choir rehearsals resume with a New Cherub choir for children ages 4-7 years old, led by our own Joel Wood. This Friday the last of our outdoor movie series, "Movies on Macomb".  Bring your blankets, lawn chairs and friends to watch Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - start time will be 8 pm instead of 8:30 pm, as the sun sets earlier as we move into the fall!

This coming Sunday, September 15 there will be a Blessing of the Backpacks at all three services and a Moon Bounce (the missing moon bounce from Homecoming finds it way home) following the 10 am service. While you are here check out the refurbished playground & evolving Children's Nursery. Finally, in just a few weeks our Sunday School will resume with our new Youth and Family Missioner, Lizzie Polk.

Our parish retreat at Shrine Mont is the last weekend of September (27-29) and is a wonderful opportunity for families to get away, build relationships and watch your children run free in the safe and beautiful bubble that is ShrineMont!  Lastly, we are planning a Fall Festival full of family friendly events for the parish and neighborhood in late October.  Stay tuned.

More information on all of these events can be found below.

Welcome back to all of our new and returning families!

It's going to be an exciting year!
Thank you to all who have given their time, muscle, money and prayers to help make all of these dreams a reality!

Message from Lizzie Polk, Youth and Family Missioner

Greeting St. Davids’ families! I am thrilled to introduce myself as the new Youth & Family Missioner.  I come to the position with 11 years of teaching experience as both a kindergarten teacher and an early childhood special education teacher.  In addition to my love of children and passion for teaching, I also know how formative a child’s relationship to God and their Church community can be.  I grew up attending Sunday School and participating in Church youth activities, and those experiences shaped the person I am today.  I have two small children myself: Isabelle, 3, who can’t wait to begin Sunday school, and Henry, 19 months. I look forward to meeting you and your little ones, and am so excited to work together to help St. David’s continue to grow as a great place for children and families!

Children Choirs Resume with New Cherub Choir

It was great to see so many of you this past Sunday at our Homecoming service and barbeque at St. David's. I hope everyone had a restful summer and you are all looking forward to fall and the academic the year ahead. This fall at St. David’s we have some exciting changes regarding our choirs. We are adding a new Cherub Choir, which will be for children ages 4 to 7. Our own Joel Wood will be directing this new choir. The Jubilate Choir will continue under my leadership and will now be for ages 8 through high school.

We made the decision to offer a Cherub Choir so the youngest singers can get the proper attention they need to develop their musical skills. The Jubilate Choir will now focus on the musical needs of our older, more advanced singers. This will give them the opportunity to sing more difficult material and sing more often in our Sunday services. Joel has a lot of experience teaching our youngest singers and I’ll let him give you some details on his background below.

Our choir season will begin this Thursday, Sept 12th with our 6:00 pm rehearsal followed by a pizza party for both the Cherub Choir and the Jubilate Choir.  Our evening schedule will consist of separate rehearsals for both choirs before we come together for pizza around 6:35pm.

This coming Sunday, September 15th, both choirs will sing together in the 10:00 am service. Please be prompt on Sunday morning for the warm-up rehearsal at 9:40 am. I’m going to ask a huge favor this year, and this is if your children are not able to make thJOele rehearsal or the warm-up, they do not sing in the 10:00 am service.

Starting in October, we’ll return to our usual monthly first Thursday night rehearsals with pizza party afterwards. I’ve included a detailed schedule for the fall semester below.  As always, parents are encouraged to socialize in the undercroft with wine and snacks during the evening rehearsals. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or suggestions for the choir. I look forward to seeing everyone in church for Homecoming!

Regards,

-Rob

A Message from Joel Wood, Cherub Choir Director

Dear friends,

I'm thrilled for the opportunity to work with the 4 to 7 year old's in the newly established Cherub Choir. Most of you know me as the Parish Administrator but a bit more about me: I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Music, Magna cum Laude, from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. I was a scholarship recipient for the opera program and studied under Grammy Award Winning Tenor, John Aler. During my time at Mason I completed various education courses/internships and served as a co-director of children's choirs at St. George's Episcopal in Arlington, VA for four years. My approach to educating the youngest musicians is learning through play- pitch and rhythm matching games, basics of notes on a staff, time signature patterns, and perhaps most importantly- using our voices to praise God. As a father of a three year old, I know that it's never too early to begin learning music while having fun!

See you soon!

Harry Potter closes this year's Movies on Macomb at 8PM

Join us this Friday, September 13 for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the final movie in our community series “Movies on Macomb”. Bring a friend and blanket or chair and we'll provide the popcorn and drinks.  The movie start time, this week, will be half an hour earlier, given the earlier time of sunset. Movie start time is 8pm! The movie will start at 8:30 pm.

Blessing of Backpacks, BWS and MoonBounce

You are invited to bring your backpacks, lunchboxes and/or briefcases to any of our 3 Sunday services on September 15 to be blessed! We will also be collecting cash donations to help the outreach committee in Saint David's annual ministry of providing the school supplies for Bishop Walker School students in grades 1-3. Following the 10 am service, please join us for a MoonBounce and Slide on the front lawn.  After the MoonBounce failed to show up last Sunday - the company that we contracted with would like to offer their apologies to the church by bringing one for us to play on this coming Sunday.

Parish Retreat

The perfect place for families with children!  Join us for our Parish Retreat at the lovey Shrine Mont Conference Center in rural Orkney Springs, VA. Enjoy lots of downtime or take part in our fellowship and worship programs- it's up to you! To register, or call the office or click here

Fall Festival

With some of the monies awarded to Saint David’s by the diocese through our Congregational Growth Grant, we will be hosting a fall festival this year at Saint David’s for our friends and neighbors.  If you would like to join in the planning of this community event, please contact the Parish Office.

Playground & New Nursery

A group of volunteers weeded/cleaned, mulched (with playground safe product), and power-washed/repaired the entire playground as a “back to school” gift to the children in our community. We hope you and your children will check it out this Sunday, following the services. We extend a huge thank you to Kristen Hawley, Catherine Nottingham, Clare Piercy, Alex Shockey, and Joel Wood for their efforts to make this happen.

We have also made great strides in turning our temporary nursery into a welcoming, safe and joyful place for all children. Let us know what you think!
