Suicides Down Significantly

There were no reported suicides from the Golden Gate Bridge last month, and so far in 2019 there has been a drammatic drop in the total number of deaths. That's of little solace to the families that have lost loved ones to the bridge this year, but it bodes well in terms of the impact that the suicide deterrent system, now being constructed on the bridge, will have when it's completed. The number of interventions by Bridge Patrol and California Highway Patrol officers also is down significantly this year.
Net Event

Last month the Golden Gate Bridge District invited media, family members who lost loved ones to the bridge, and Bridge Rail Foundation representatives to a special event in Richmond where a 300-foot facsimile of the suicide deterrent sysrem now being constucted was displayed. It was an overcast, rainy day, but the work continued anyway, as it has since the start of the project. The completion date remains January 2021.
Verrazzano Bridge Suicides

The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in New York connects Staten Island and Brooklyn. A recent rash of suicides, including three in one month, is causing local officials to worry that the bridge is becoming the East Coast version of the Golden Gate Bridge as a suicide magnet. Additional security cameras on the bridge and signs reading "Life is worth living," above suicide hotline phones, haven't discouraged jumpers, who park in traffic (the bridge doesn't have pedestrian walkways), then leap.
