Regional MR/AR/VR Events
The First MAVRIC Conference on October 17-18, 2018 was a fantastic success.  Thanks to our partners, speakers, staff, and volunteers for making it a great intro to MAVRIC for the region!

Dessert & Discourse with Tronster Hartley - Dessert and Discourse is a series featuring insights from thought leaders exploring technology, innovation, and initiatives playing a role in the new economy as we prepare for Exploration Commons at 50 East, a 14,000 sf Makerspace, Culinary Literacy Center, and Collaborative Work and Meeting Space coming to the lower level of the Westminster Branch. The series is presented by JeannieBird Baking Company and Carroll County Public Library.  LINK

Mason’s Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation will be hosting Techstars Startup Weekend GMU on November 9-11, 2018. Running from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening at George Mason’s main campus in Fairfax, VA, this event will be a great opportunity for entrepreneurially-minded students to work in teams to develop startup concepts. The event is detailed here, and you can register here ($30 early-bird rate).

Nov. 16: The deadline to register to compete in The Hult Prize at UMD is coming up! Have an idea to create jobs for 10,000 young people in the next decade? Find some teammates and compete in Hult@UMD on Nov. 30 for a shot at pitching to the United Nations and a $1 million grand prize. Learn more and apply here.

Nov 30: 9 AM -5 PM: Together with leading professionals from theater, film, and the world of Mixed, Augmented and Virtual Reality, MAVRIC's Director, Lucien Parsons, the panel will look at the ways that emerging technologies are being integrated into the creation and performance of artistic, documentary, and feature films.  Join us by registering at

Funding Opportunities

SPIRE-EIT is a ten-week undergraduate internship where students work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams, receive core training, and gain hands-on research experience with emerging interface technologies. 

The Verizon 5G EdTech Challenge is a nationwide open call to find the best innovative, cutting-edge, creative education technologies that will transform middle school education.
Application Deadline: Friday, November 30th, 2018
10 Challenge winners will each be awarded a $100K grant, and will partner with Verizon to develop and test their solutions in the 5G environment starting in January 2019. 

MD Only:
Want to increase your chances of winning Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) funding? Team TEDCO has opened application process to select up to 30 companies to participate in the SBIR Proposal Lab for Fall/Winter 2018 DOD and NOAA SBIR solicitations. The Proposal Lab runs from November 21, 2018 until February 9, 2019.  Application 

Teachers Only:
The Neville-Pribram Mid-Career Educators Awards provide mid-career educators with travel funding that will enable him/her to use Smithsonian Libraries collections to develop educational materials (materials may include lesson plans, study modules, educational games, educational websites, etc.).LINK

UK Only:
Innovate UK, as part of UK Research and Innovation, will invest up to £8 million in innovation projects to enable immersive content to be created faster and more efficiently. This competition is part of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund’s Audience of the Future (ISCF AotF) programme. LINK
