Tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Saralyn Murray Oyer and I grew up in Northeast Ohio in a small town called Orrville. I am in the middle of two brothers and two sisters. Growing up, we enjoyed biking to our neighbor's pond to swim and fish (sometimes at the same time)! We were always looking for an adventure. I attended Central Christian School during my middle school and high school years. I was also an active member of my church, Martins Mennonite.
Where did you go to College and what did you major in? What have you been doing post college?
After high school I moved to Goshen, Indiana and attended Goshen College where I majored in American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting. After graduating with my B.A. I worked at various schools, supporting students at different educational levels. My work as an interpreter brought me to Hesston, Kansas. At the Kansas Relief Sale I met John Oyer, and a few years later, in 2017, we decided to get married. That next fall I decided to go back to school for my nursing degree. I attended Hesston College and completed the BSN program in May of 2019. For the past year I have been working as a nurse in our local hospital. It has been a wonderful experience and I have learned so much!
What led you to Crooked Creek?
I have always loved camp! My father, Randy Murray, was the camp director at Camp Luz in Kidron, Ohio. I grew up attending camp and later working at camp. When I first met my husband, we had a conversation about how much I love camp and knew I would end up back at a camp some day. When we came across the opportunity at Crooked Creek for the program director position we prayed about it and soon after I applied. I feel so blessed to have this opportunity to serve at Crooked Creek and am excited to meet all of you!
Do you have any previous camp experience?
Yes! As soon as I was old enough I started working at camp. I even remember begging my parents to let me work as many weeks as possible. I have worked at four different camps through the years and visited many more. I enjoyed various roles from housekeeping and cooking to counseling and being the aquatics director. I enjoy learning from others and working together as a team!
What do you like to do for fun?
For fun I enjoy riding my bike around town with my husband, building a fire to cook over, and I also enjoy a cup of coffee while catching up with friends or family.
What are you looking forward to about working at Crooked Creek?
I am so excited about being back at camp! I am looking forward to planning fun activities for individuals of all ages to enjoy. I am also really looking forward to meeting all of you! I really enjoy meeting new people and making connections!
I enjoy piecing quilts for the Relief Sale! I have made two for the Kansas Relief Sale and look forward to making more for the Iowa Relief Sale!
