Introducing New Staff for 2021-22

It is with great excitement that we introduce The Academy’s new teachers and staff for the 2021-22 school year. As we continue to grow, we continue to be amazed at the incredible people God brings to our school and to our Academy family. Please join us in welcoming these new faces!
New Teachers

My name is Jenna Shepard, and I am overjoyed to be a part of the Academy family. My first introduction to education was with Twickenham Kids Preschool where I spent 3 years serving as both an assistant teacher and a lead teacher. After realizing how much I loved the world of education, I decided to switch careers and jumped in with both feet earning my M.Ed. in Collaborative Special Education from the University of West Alabama. I currently serve as a Collaborative Teacher for the Academy of Academics and Arts 6th, 7th and 8th grades. I am married to my husband, Daniel, and we have 4 children: Sydney (14), Ben (10), Silas (8), Eliza (8). I am “over-the-moon” to be a part of the Academy because I have seen my children absolutely flourish here spiritually, academically, and socially. This school has become one of our family’s greatest blessings. I am beyond grateful to be on the Kindergarten team, and I can’t wait to meet my future Kinder-Warriors!

First Grade

My name is Anna Kachelman and I was born and raised here in Huntsville. I have been married to my wonderful husband, Matt for 11 years and we have two precious daughters, Ila (8) and Lucy (5).  Both of our girls started their first year at The Academy this year. My family quickly fell in love with the school and everything it represents. I surrendered to the Lord my desire to teach at The Academy, and I am so grateful that I will have the opportunity to be a part of The Academy family next school year. I have taught first grade for 12 years in Huntsville City Schools, and I look forward to teaching first grade at The Academy. My family is thrilled to start this journey, and I look forward to meeting all of the amazing families at The Academy.

Third Grade with Mrs. Hodge

My name is Rebecca Bawcom and grew up in Lake Charles, Louisiana. I received my Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from Louisiana State University. My husband, Brad, and I have three children: Jack (12), Madeline (10) and Brennan (8). We attend Rivertree Church and have been in Huntsville for 5 years. After being a stay-at-home mom for 10 years, I started asking the Lord to show me what was next. Over the course of a couple years, He led me right back into the classroom! My love for children and passion for teaching is abundant and I am so thankful for the opportunity to be a part of our amazing school! In my free time I enjoy watching my kids sports activities, hiking, boating, wakeboarding, cooking, traveling and spending time with family and friends!.

Fifth Grade

My name is Hannah Peters and I am overjoyed to be joining The Academy! I have been a classroom teacher for 12 years in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. I have a Bachelors and Masters degree in Elementary Education from Auburn University. My experience has been in Russell County, Mountain Brook City, and Huntsville City Schools. I have enjoyed the last 6 years as a teacher at Blossomwood Elementary, but I cannot wait to begin this new chapter at The Academy! My husband, Ben Peters, and I have two children, Olivia and Lawson. Olivia is a 2nd grader at WCA and Lawson will be joining her next year as a student in TK. I am so looking forward to being at school with both of them and getting to know more of the wonderful students at The Academy!
New Staff

Events Director

My name is Catherine Looser, and this is my 11th year as a parent and 8th year as a teacher. I am married to Jon and mom to Jon David (10th grade) and Anna (8th grade). We are members of Oak Park Baptist Church. I am forever grateful for the wonderful years that I was blessed to spend in first grade, but I am also very excited about the new role God has led me to. I love The Academy and all of our amazing families! My dad was a Chick-fil-A operator and I truly believe that shaped my idea of serving others and stepping in when needed. This role will allow me to do those things as well as interact with all of our families, and I can’t wait!

Grammar School Assistant Principal

My name is Kristina Maples and my husband, Jacob, and I have been Academy parents for the last 4 years. Our daughter, Clara, is currently in Mrs. Brumlow’s second grade class. We have witnessed first-hand how God uses The Academy to shape the lives of the students, parents, and community. We have another baby girl due in June of this year. There is no doubt in our mind that we have chosen the best school for our family.

I am in my 13th year as an educator, having taught previously in Arab City Schools, Vestavia Hills City Schools, and Madison City Schools. This is my second year at The Academy and by far the most rewarding career decision I have made.

In the summer of 2020 I was planning on returning to my tenured position in Madison City Schools, while halfway to my state retirement, when God presented me with an opportunity to apply at Whitesburg Christian Academy. I took my resume to the office and prayed for an interview. I was hired and currently teach second grade with a team of teachers who have accepted me like family. This school year has been a huge blessing.

My long-term career plan has always been to move into an administrative role. After I completed my undergraduate degree and began teaching full time, I began graduate school to continue my love of learning. I earned my M.A. in Elementary Education and Ed.S. in Educational Administration from the University of Alabama. During my interview at The Academy I was able to discuss those plans and my degrees with Mrs. Edgemon and Mr. Reeder. When they shared the possibility of an assistant principal position opening up at the Grammar School, I realized just how much God had in store for me and my place at The Academy. As scary as it was for me to leave public school, I know I have found my career home.

My family and I have recently joined Whitesburg Baptist Church. Jacob and I have lived in Huntsville for 11 years. As a family we love to travel, walk our dog Albus, and play golf on sunny days.
