Dear Friend of The Commons,

As we review two big decisions — first, to launch The Commons Eastport in 2004, now acknowledged as our Flagship Shop, and celebrate the four month launch of our new Online Shop, we join the rest of the world in knowing what a different and challenging year this has been. The Commons has stepped further into the world, with technology allowing us to more fully share the creations of our artists, artisans and authors and our precious natural place. We look forward to what is to come.

As we invite you to review our postings for 2020 and our present In Celebration Collections and Offerings, we also invite you to look forward to 2021, with our first posting titled Artful Living: Arts and Words to debut January 1st! Today we give a bit of a clue of how we are entering this new year — as a time of deep reflection and with the lightness of hope.  It’s in the colors you see in our “news” today, and the idea behind them.

We applaud Pantone Color Institute, the major global color authority, which recently announced its 2021 “Color of the Year.”  For only the second time ever, the Institute has named not one, but "Two Colors of the Year":  the colors you see here — "PANTONE® 17-5104 Ultimate Gray, a calming shade that brings to mind stable concrete foundations and serene pebbled beaches—and PANTONE® 13-0647 Illuminating Yellow, evoking sunshine, tart lemon and cheerful spirits."

The institute’s decision to name two shades is described as “conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting,” Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow each serving a specific purpose. “Each of them has their own emotional value, the gray being the one that’s more supportive and solid, the practical foundation that we need, and the yellow is about hopefulness and sunshine and good cheer,” Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the institute, recently told TIME magazine.

Good colors, great ideas! We’ll keep these in mind as we look forward to 2021! We send our best wishes to you all for a Happy New Year!
