Our Top Wine Picks of the Week:
92Pt Burgundy Pinot Noir & 93Pt Barolo!

Pinot Noir is the king of Burgundy. In fact, if you are drinking a red wine from Burgundy, it is almost guaranteed to be a Pinot Noir. During the 10th and 11th centuries, the Cistercian Monks invested a great deal of time analyzing the soil and weather in Burgundy and mapped out the best areas to grow Pinot Noir. French wine law is based on their observations, and only the best areas in Burgundy are able to label their wines Grand Cru (the top classification). Pinot Noir from Burgundy is said to be some of the finest wine in the world.

Pinot Noir is a thin-skinned grape that picks up the quality of land that it is grown in. Many of these qualities enhance the delicate and delicious fruity and earthy flavours of the grape.

Nebbiolo is located mainly in the Piedmont region of Italy. This area is often nicknamed the “Burgundy of Italy”, as the weather is fairly similar. The climate is cooler and the varietals exhibit good acidity and earthy flavours (although the structure and power of the varietals that grow in Piedmont couldn’t be more different than Burgundy’s elegant varietals.) The two main subregions within Piedmont that produce some of the best Nebbiolo are Barolo and Barbaresco.

Nebbiolo has a wide variety of aromas and flavours: red berries, roses, herbs, licorice, and even tar are some of the key tasting notes in this powerful wine.

Domaine Roux Père & Fils Saint-Aubin Les Frionnes 1er Cru 2016
Pinot Noir

From one of the top two producers in Saint-Aubin, this Pinot Noir offers loads of ripe berry fruit and nuanced oak influences in an approachable frame. There's good balance and a nice food-friendly acidity at work here. A good match for grilled chicken with asparagus and black olives. (LCBO Vintages panel, Oct. 2018)

“This is a ripe and immediately engaging, perfumed and stylish Saint-Aubin Premier Cru from Roux. Wood is still heavy on the flavour profile, but there's ample fruit and substance on the palate to envision future harmony. Ripe tannins are already quite polished, if gently dusty, and will continue to refine. Excellent length. Best after 2020.” Score: 92 Pts. -  John Szabo, MS, Tasted February 2018 (2015 Vintage).

San Silvestro Patres Barolo 2014

"A stylish Barolo, with expressive aromas of dried fruit, roses and tar. The deep fruits are layered with minerality on the smooth and mouth-filling palate and sweet tannins weave through to a very long, elegant finish. This top-end Barolo has the intensity to accompany rich, red meat dishes, game and flavoursome stews. Wonderful with wild boar, venison, pheasant or guineafowl in a truffle sauce. Also accompanies mature, strong cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino vecchio, mature Cheddar and blue cheeses." -

"100% Nebbiolo. Plump discreet nose. The palate is concentrated and stunning with appealing flavours of red apple and spice, supported by a slight bitterness and notes of crab apple." Score: 93 Pts. - Decanter World Wine Awards, 2018.
