September is approaching and school will soon be back in session, but there is still plenty of time to enjoy the lingering warm weather on these late summer days.

To help keep you stocked up for your end of summer socials and backyard barbeques, we have selected some of our favourite wines from the Iberian Peninsula.  This historic region, known for its rich culture and cuisine, encompasses Spain, Portugal, Andorra, and a small part of Southern France.

Diversity is natural across this large geographic region but one common feature that we see in the wines from the Iberian Peninsula is how they always over-deliver in quality, especially considering their modest price.

We have selected wines from three producers to end your summer on a beautiful note. These wines pair easily with a diverse range of cuisines, and are always received with a smile.

Quinta da Raza, ‘Raza’ Vinho Verde 2020
Best Buy – Years Best Vinho Verdes, 90 Pts. - Josh Greene, Wine & Spirits Magazine
Five generations of the Teixeira Coelho family have nurtured their estate through time. Now in the hands of Jose Diogo and his wife Mafalda Pulido, they work with a deep respect for the history of the estate, but continue to strive for improved quality, embracing evolving trends and new wines styles.
Quinta da Raza is located near Celorico de Basto, in the hills above the Tamega River, inland from the sea and close to the border with Vila Real, which may account for the fruity richness of this wine’s flavors—pineapple, lychee, just edging towards ripeness. Clean, fragrant, with enough weight to the blend (Arinto Aazal and Trajadura). Serve with grilled chicken.

Pagos de Araiz Crianza, Navarra 2017
A young innovative winery started in 2000 when the Masaveu family acquired a property on the outskirts of Olite, Navarre.  Now with 240ha of estate vineyards, Pagos de Araiz's diverse range of holdings allows for the selection of the best grapes to craft quality wines that are always a delight to drink.
The 2017 Pagos de Araiz Crianza shows flavours of ripe, dark fruit, cocoa, and spice leading to fine tannin and good balance. Each grape variety was vinified and aged separately in a combination of French and American oak barrels for 11 months, after which the wine was blended and spent a further six months in stainless steel. An approachable Crianza at a fantastic price. A blend of Tempranillo, Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Easy to drink and to pair with any dish from the Mediterranean diet.

Navascués ‘Cutio Crush’ Mixed Pack (6 bottles – 3 Macabeo, 3 Grenache)
Still relatively new to our portfolio, the Cutio wines from Navascués Enología have quickly developed a strong fan base amongst our team and our customers alike. To allow more of you to discover these exciting (and delicious) wines, we have put together this Cutio sampler pack.

Based in the Aragon Region of Spain, Navascues Enologia is a project founded by Brothers Mariano & Jorge Navascués and their father, Jesus. With each being a highly regarded winemaker in their own right, this powerhouse trio set out to use their combined experience and talents to consult for wineries, throughout Spain. Eventually two labels of their own were born: Vino Mancuso and Cutio. The vision of their personal projects was to create wines that are emblematic of the Aragon region, and show the quality terroir of this often overlooked area. Showcasing these pure and direct wines with varietal expressiveness of their region is the vision of Navascués Enología.

Navascués Enología, Cutio Macabeo 2018, Carinena D.O.
“Coming from 40-year-old vines located on clay-limestone soils. The wine is fermented cool in stainless steel, then matured for 12 months on lees in underground concrete vats. The resulting wine is mineral and lively with good acidity, citrus rather than floral, good purity and delineation.” 91 Pts. - LG, Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate.

Navascués Enología Cutio Garnacha 2018, Carinena D.O.
“Produced by brothers Mariano and Jorge Navascues the Cutio (which means ‘Forever’ in Aragonese), this wine has evolved significantly since the last vintage. The addition of Carinena brings in a marked balsamic character. There is a creamy quality, which plays a slight tree bark and mint. Fine grain tannins and a fresh balanced acidity. 85% Garnacha 15% Carinena with both varietals coming off 50+ year old bush vines.”  90 Pts. - LG, Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate.

Buttery cheese, briny-sweet shellfish, bite-sized Basque pintxos—all washed down with wines that reflect their unique terroir. If you had to choose one small corner of the globe as your launchpad for an unforgettable border-crossing food adventure, it’s hard to do better than the northern Iberian coast. That’s where the uppermost parts of Spain and Portugal meet southern France, and where some of the most extraordinary flavours turn up everywhere you go. Ingredients from the waters and farmlands around the northeastern Atlantic Ocean and the Bay of Biscay, prepared according to generations of tradition by the people who’ve settled there, merge together to make the region a must for culinary thrill-seekers.
