Newsletter #7 (January 2020)

Welcome to a new year with Milky Way Farm.

We have been a bit quiet on social media these days, but it does not mean that that farm has shut down for the winter. We continue to attend the downtown Kitchener Farmers Market every Saturday from 7am-2pm, and have been so far able to keep a pretty full table each week (pictured above is the table offering from the week of January 18th). We have a good variety of fresh salad greens, herbs, radish and turnip coming from our greenhouse each week, supplemented by the crops we have in cold storage, and a few items we continue to dig from the ground when the weather allows.

We know many of our local community and CSA members aren't able to make the trek to Kitchener each week, so we would like to offer an opportunity for local folks to get their hands on some fresh veggies during the long wait until the Summer CSA season begins again in June.

Introducing OFF SEASON "DROP-IN" DAYS!

We will be holding market-style veggie pick-ups from 4-8pm the last Thursday of the month, from January until May. These markets will be OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, and require no commitment to attend.

Simply drop by the farm (484872 Sweaburg Rd., Woodstock), and pick out a small share (8 items for $20), or a full share (15 items for $35).

Items available at the first pickup on January 30th include: salad mix, spinach, arugula, dill, cilantro, radish, baby turnip, leek, parsnip, carrot, beet, onion, potato, rutabaga, kohlrabi, celeriac, daikon radish, cabbage, napa, garlic, squash.
"Drop-in" Pickups are held from 4-8pm on the following days: Jan. 30th, Feb. 27th, Mar. 26th, Apr. 30th, May 28th

Planning for the 2020 season

Besides market prep, the majority of our time these days is spent at the computer, determining quantities, varieties and timing of all of our crops. The recent release of some in-depth new low-till/regenerative farming books is also keeping us busy druing these snowy days.

Winter in the greenhouse

We minimally heat our greenhouse through the winter, and use in-soil heating to keep the root zone at a more favourable temperature. We have just sprouted the first new tomato and pepper seeds of the year, which will replace the salad greens in these beds come March.

Sign-Up is now open for the 2020 Summer CSA Season!
Find Out More
On behalf of Jesse, Meghan (and Harry), we would like to thank all of the people who support us by becoming CSA members, shopping weekly from our market table, stopping by our seasonal farm stand, or lending a hand with the planting and harvest. We wouldn't be here without your support, and it means a lot to us. We look forward to the upcoming years as we are able to improve and refine our systems, renovate our CSA pick-up accommodations, and connect with more of our community through the sharing of fresh, quality food.
