IMPORTANT SURVEY FOR TOWNSHIP OF MUSKOKA LAKES

MUST BE COMPLETED BY THIS FRIDAY AUGUST 9TH !

The Township of Muskoka Lakes is in the process of writing a NEW Official Plan that will influence the future of Muskoka and Council wants to hear from all of us.  Your voice can be heard in three ways:

  1. EASIEST:  Fill in the Township survey  TODAY - deadline this Friday August 9th
  2. Attend the Public Meeting on Friday August 16th - 9:00 am at the Community Centre, 3 Bailey Street,  Port Carling. Everyone who wants to speak will have the opportunity.
  3. Write to your Councillors and Mayor and tell them what concerns you most about Muskoka and what you want to protect.  Send your letter to planning@muskokalakes.ca Political contact info here.
We have heard from many of our supporters over the past two years and key issues of concern that we hear repeatedly include:

- Overdevelopment on the lakes, including small lakes
- Character of Muskoka changing for the worse - crowded, noisy
- Damage caused by large developments on the waterfront
- High density waterfront residential masquerading as condo resorts
- Blue-green Algal blooms - need to take proactive action
- Increased flooding
- Deteriorating water quality in general
- Effect of old septic systems on the lake - should be mandatory testing
- Fewer loons
- Fast, unsafe, loud boats
- Increasing light pollution with glassed-in boathouses
- Problem short-term rental properties
- Too many heliports
- Protect what we have left to buffer against climate change and allow the next generation a chance to enjoy what we have enjoyed.
- Pressure to develop every last piece of 200’ frontage
ADD YOUR VOICE TODAY!

Thanks so much for helping to preserve the Muskoka we all love,

FRIENDS OF MUSKOKA

Friends of Muskoka are a group of dedicated volunteers working to protect and to preserve the natural environment and unique character of Muskoka by promoting responsible use and development of its land and lakes. Friends of Muskoka believe that the environment IS the economy in Muskoka since millions of people come to Muskoka and invest here because of its clean water and natural, treed shorelines. Our lakes, forests and rivers are a resource that can drive Muskoka’s economy for decades to come if we put the environment first. To this end, Friends of Muskoka is trying to stop residential subdivisions on the waterfront in Muskoka and will work to enshrine sustainable development in the Municipal and District Official Plans.
