WAVES - BREAKING NEWS

IN THIS ISSUE: (Press  to return to this index)
After significant septic problems over several years, the Marriott has agreed to strict new controls and monitoring of their septic system to protect the water quality in Muskoka.

MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS COMING TO MARRIOTT SEPTIC SYSTEMS

We are now able to report some good news on the septic issue at JW Marriott The Rosseau Resort and Spa on Lake Rosseau. You will remember that over the last few years there have been a number of significant septic spills (WAVES: Special Report on Marriott, and Water Quality Report), some of which were reported to have spilled untreated sewage down to the shore of Lake Rosseau.

Under the guidance of the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, the Marriott has agreed to comply with all of the conditions recommended by a third-party specialist, Tatham Engineering (Collingwood, Ontario). The recommendations include a surge tank and 24/7 online monitoring - positive news for all of us in the surrounding areas. Many thanks to the MECP for taking aggressive action to correct this threat to the environment.

GREAT NEWS FOR ALL THE USERS OF THE MUSKOKA LAKES

NEXT STEPS WITH LEGACY COTTAGES

Unfortunately, the news regarding the development at the Legacy property is not good. Legacy filed an appeal with the LPAT (formerly the OMB) challenging the failure of the District to approve a condo development on the previous Lakeside Lodge property (43 residences with up to 6 bedrooms each, and 9 docks with capacity from 38 to 53 powerboats). The hearing in late February was very unsatisfactory: it lasted only four hours, third-party witnesses were not allowed to testify, and there was no provision for cross-examination. We received the LPAT decision in March confirming that they won their appeal.

We have time to consider our options, as the deadlines to respond have been extended indefinitely because of the COVID 19 outbreak. We will need your help to stop this development from setting a precedent for all of the Muskoka lakes.

Stay tuned—there’s more to come. Check the "Stop Legacy" page on the Save Muskoka website for the latest information on what we're doing to stop this unsustainable development.

We wish you and your loved ones continued strength and good health as we move forward in confidence together.

FRIENDS OF MUSKOKA

Friends of Muskoka are a group of dedicated volunteers working to protect and to preserve the natural environment and unique character of Muskoka by promoting responsible use and development of its land and lakes. Friends of Muskoka believe that the environment IS the economy in Muskoka since millions of people come to Muskoka and invest here because of its clean water and natural, treed shorelines. Our lakes, forests and rivers are a resource that can drive Muskoka’s economy for decades to come if we put the environment first. To this end, Friends of Muskoka is trying to stop residential subdivisions on the waterfront in Muskoka and will work to enshrine sustainable development in the Municipal and District Official Plans.
